HiSaver slays vampire power

CeBit 2009 Powering ahead to lower power
Mon Mar 09 2009, 12:22

WITH 4300 EXHIBITORS peddling their tech goods at this year's CeBit, it was all too easy to overlook some of the really simple, yet innovative and useful, gadgets which could actually make a real difference.

One such piece of 'K.I.S.S' tech was a multiplug device from Korean firm, HiSaver, aiming to halt the hemorrhaging of power from computers and computing accessories when they are not required.

This HiSaver achieves by coupling the multiplug with an optical motion sensor attached to a user's PC, detecting activity and motion. If a user has stepped out for a certain period of time, the device shuts off the power strip, near eliminating every watt of vampire power suckage.

So what? you may ask. Loads of firms out there have systems which switch to 'standby mode' after a while. True, but although it consumes less power, standby mode still allows for a certain amount of suckage HiSaver doesn't.

HiSaver's multiplug completely shuts off power to the computer's display, printer, speakers and other peripherals, whilst still leaving the PC connected, cutting down on oodles of power with no loss of data. Simple, yet utterly efficient.

Impressed, the INQ asked when the system would be available in shops and was told the product was still somewhat under development but should be hitting shelves by April or May at a suggested retail price of about 30 pounds (35 euros). New products, based on the same, energy efficient concept may also be unveiled in June, a company rep told us.

Just imagine the difference to your electricity bill if the firm expands its range to televisions, stereos, lights, air-conditioning and a plethora of other appliances we eco-ignorants consistently forget to turn off.

High marks for HiSaver on this one, we th'INQ.µ

Be Green, buy something

So how much power does the powersaver use to monitor for motion?

Forget about shutting off the 100W light's, or running the 1800W hairdryer less! This baby will cut the 1/2 a watt of power your cell phone charge uses when nothing is plugged into it!

If a million billion people did this to 50 devices, and then told 10 friends who told 10 friends, the world would be well... probably the same, but that's not the point! You would be green and feel better about your pitiful existance! Why? Because YOU made a difference!

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
