Intel reinvents the aerial

TV coming to a lap near you
Thursday, 5 March 2009, 10:58

INTEL RECKONS YOU'LL BE able to gawp at the idiot box 24 hours a day soon thanks to a new invention.

Antenna

The genius boffins at Intel have saved us the trouble of carting around an external digital TV antenna by sandwiching it inside a laptop's screen.

Intel reckons this is a world first and the company has a patent pending on the idea.

We are finding it hard to believe that no-one has ever come up with such a simple trick  before. Then again, such innovations are easy to call obvious with the gift of hindsight. µ

Fud at its best.

Like Wifi, Bluetooth, Internal 3G aren't doing it for some time now.

And it is even more silly if they are going to patent it.

Not original

Placing an aerial on glass is nothing new, I remember as a child having that rear window heater metal strip acting as an aerial. The principal is the same. So no they should not be able to patent the obvious but from what is reported about the US patent office they will allow it.

Old is still neat

We had a '76 Buick station wagon with the aerial embedded in the windshield. Simple dipole affair with two leads running in parallel up the centre and splitting off across the top. Very hypnotic on long distance journeys. Not too efficient, though; GM went back to retractable aerials within a couple years. Never heard of the rear heating strip used that way, but why not?
