Give your PC a bleach makeover

Nibble Wonder where the yellow went
Tuesday, 3 March 2009, 17:50

A GROUP of Amiga computer enthusiasts think they have come up with an idea to stop ancient computers going yellow. Flame retardant plastics in computers meant that the likes of an Amiga turned yellow with age.

While it has been known that Hydrogen Peroxide could stop the rot, it was not very effective. A bloke called Dave from Manchester, UK, aka 'Merlin', started a project to see if they could turn their old hardware into its old colour.

Apparently a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, a small amount of an "Oxy" laundry booster as a catalyst and a UV lamp will turn a yellow computer back to its normal condition in a few hours. µ

I think I might wait a few years

The technique looks very useful at returning things to their original colours; however I would advise caution before you go dunking all your kit.

I think there is at least a possibility that this treatment might damage the plastic long term. I say it's better to have slightly yellow now, than completely crumbled next month.

Of course it's possible that I'm just being too cautious ;)
