SOFTWARE giant Microsoft has banned a woman from its Xbox live service because she listed herself as a lesbian in her profile.
Consumerist magazine has reported that 'Teresa' got shedloads of abuse from other players and in the end the gay haters shopped her to the Vole. Microsoft took the liberated and enlightened view that it didn't want anyone to mention sex. Ever.
Games were all about shooting and carving people up and not about thinking about two women pleasuring each other.
"Any use the text or comments that anyhow indicates the sexual orientation of the gamer, gay or straight, will result in a ban," said the Vole. µ

gays want one thing they will never ever get no matter how many laws they change or how many states they force to marrie them despite the will of the people and thats acceptance.
STOP COMPAIRING HOMOSEXUALITY WITH RACE. ONE IS AN ACT ONE IS WHAT YOU ARE. I DONT ASK PEOPLES SXUAL PREFERANCE AND I AM SICK OF GAYS TELLING ME THERRS AND HATING THE FACT PEOPLE DISAPROVE. I LIVE IN AMERICA I HAVE THE RIGHT TO FORM MY OWN OPINION OF YOUR SINFUL ACTIONS DEAL WITH IT.
Now granted microsoft is well within their rights to do this since it is a private service, although it will require a rewrite of the XBL terms of service if they really intend to enforce this rule, I still would not be surprised to see a lawsuit raised over this on grounds of discrimination. Afterall if someone was to put "I'm a super pimp and when I'm not gaming I'm having sex" they wouldn't have an issue with it.
That said the simple fact is MS gives you a space to talk about yourself on XBL and as such you should be free to describe yourself in any socially acceptable way. Last I looked calling yourself a lesbian was socially acceptable unless you lived in the deep south and even then there are areas you can do it without fear. Now if she had started going into details of her sex life then I could see why MS might take issue with it because there are children on XBL, honestly most people on XBL seem to be children atleast when it comes to mental capacity.
Anyway when it comes right down to it XBL is a social networking system and last I looked pretty much every social networking system had a space for sexual orientation as part of your profile because people tend to group together by various factors including sexual orientation.
what's next? can't mention that your black?
and the sex excuse is bullsh*t. beieng a lesbian doesn"t mean sex but say that you love girl's so straight people shoudn't mention that they are in love.
excuse my english.
Who wouldnt pay to see someone being a lesbian....
(comment on above poster, ahem)
Yep.
Xbox live bans christian, muslim, hebrew religious term and names even more harshly than most, derogitory terms or anything than can be used as such.It is an all or nothing mentality.
It has nothing to do with bigotry or hate. Now if they choose too open it up everyone will have to shut up about their favorite unliked mindset.
Because you can do what ever and nobody cares
i wouldnt pay for xbox live subsciption to read that someone is gay....
gargh
On Xbox Live there is no 'gays' 'lesbians' 'straight' 'guy' 'girl', there is only gamers.
Xbox live shouldn't be used in a way to stir up trouble, its not a forum. Its basically used to game, and game, and game, and to express views of gaming etc, nothing else.
There is not really any freedom of speech when you agree to someone else’s terms and conditions. And there is a really good reason for that. The service is a take it or leave it service. If one doesn't agree, they don't have to use the service.
The service is not a means to express views, or make one seem superior in any way to the other, or express views of sexual orientation or conduct sexual harassment. By people being anonymous, peace is kept amongst all gamers. This is good as it allows people who would usually not get along in real work, work as a team on Xbox live.
in a way, she did make herself a target. Who really cares what sexual preference she has, it has nothing to do with gaming, and that just makes her a target. She is in a way acting like a sh*t disturber by making herself a target for sexual harassment. If everyone keeps that personnel information to themselves, then basically everyone is only a gamer tag with a gamer score, in essence 'equals'.
So, the lesson here is: don’t make yourself a target. And making yourself a target aka 'sh*t disturber' your at blame as much as the ones that harass you.
This from a company that's lead by a guy, who is notorious for the following quote: "Fucking Eric Schmidt is a fucking pussy. I'm going to fucking bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to fucking kill Google."
Dream on, Steve Ballmer, or to rephrase it in your choice of language: Linux feels like an anal intruder doesn't it? Like what you feel, sucker?
Anytime you allow the individual decide the fate of someone else we get a witch hunt on our hands here. I never trust anything that the group decide instead of a person who is impartial to it. If that was really the right way then we wouldn't have police or judges for that matter. I personally hope this does cause problems for M$. Gay couples tend to have more money then hetero couples since most gay couples don't have children so they will generally have more disposable income. This could be a problem with such luxury devices like the Xbox.
Heh heh.
What is her xbox tag, maybe that would shed some light on this.
If she was called "MaryTheLezzie" or "2canchew", maybe there is a point. Even if the name is funny.
Sanitising everything is a bit dull, but sometimes corporates have to do it to mainain a family friendly image.
This is just making me laugh.
Chuck, you raise some interesting points, but it does serve to highlight that no matter how politically correct people are told to be, a lot of them just aren't, pure and simple.
What this article does tell me though, is that this site's credibility has successfully deteriorated below that of a Daily Mail article about a Flame Grilled Whopper (FLAME, DAILY MAIL, get it? Yeah, I was thinking if I use it at least once every comment it might be up there with "Vole").
Seems people did not learn anything about the Constitution and the first Amendment. First, the freedom of speech applies to everything that can be spoken. Speech alone is not an act. There are circumstances where it is not free (such as inciting murder, causing a riot, etc.), but apparently it's all good when someone harasses others on Xbox and other services.
As for "not using the media" - get real. The nutjobs who believe that someone else's sexual orientation effects them somehow are usually the self-loathing closet cases that are busy promoting the "anti-gay" agenda in the first place - believing no one will notice that they are gay as long as they rail against gays. That's just sad - but they "use the media" to play the hate card - so really - those honest gays who are open about it are somehow worse?
Sad that people always need to vilify others in order to feel better about or just hide some part of themselves in their dishonesty.
Hope that works out for you - but the rest of us realize that people are varied and have the right to be themselves and the right to pursue their own happiness.
As for this girl's negative rating - I see several plausible things here:
1) There was no lesbian - this was some "anti-gay" wacko acting out this part for their lolz
2) If she was a lesbian (or even a she) - it was that fact that the anti-gay harassers used to give her a negative rating in the first place
3) This was all a setup - and Microsoft went right along with it - to try to spark fear in any gamer who might be gay
Gaming online is one of the most offensive, bigoted and disgusting activities you can find today. Every form of racist, homophobe, xenophobe, fascist perverts are actively and openly engaged in harassing people who they perceive as "different" than themselves and "not quite human".
The sad part is that there is no difference between that sort of behavior and the KKK, Aryan Nation or the Nazis (and yes - that is Godwin's law showing its ugly head - except it's true in this case).
So. my question to Microsoft would be - did you also kick those players that harassed this player, or is that sort of behavior acceptable to you? Answer that one and show the Xboxer's that harassment isn't tolerated of any kind, and you've got a well-run community. Otherwise - online gaming is not something you want kids involved in for the most part. It's fairly disgusting.
I don't mind Lesbians. In fact, I get on rather well with most and many of my friends are lesbians....I've had girlfriends who came in a pair but perhaps that's a story for another time. In my business I do not allow employees to express their sexuality, religions or political views. I have at least two lesbians that I know of who work in my office but they don't openly express this part of their lives just as I do not express my heterosexuality.
There isn't a place for sexuality in open online gaming or at least it is for the owner of the service to decide.
I don't see a problem.
As anyone who plays on Xbox Live knows, Xbox Live is a self-policing environment. This means that Microsoft do not have to have employees 'patrolling' to make sure people are bahaving themselves.
This girl was banned because she received an amount of negative feedback sufficient enough to warrant it. Having a gamertag such as the one she did only gave other gamers ammunition against her.
It's unfortunate that because of homophobics and just sheer ignorance of some people, this girl has been banned from playing.
What doesn't help is the media writing stories with headlines such as "Microsoft Kicks Lesbian from Xbox Live" which, although the media is meant to be neutral in all matters, seem extremely one-sided.
In any case, this girl should not be using the media as a forum for gay rights nor should she be using Xbox Live as a scapegoat.
Phil, "freedom of speech" doesn't apply, as XBox Live is a private forum. Besides, "freedom of speech" really only covers contrarian political expression. It was added to the Constitution to prevent the federal government of using its powers to keep people from expressing views contrary to those of elected officials.
Apparently it doesn't apply to XBOX live.
