Spansion files for bankruptcy protection

MEMORY CHIP OUTFIT Spansion asked a US court for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday, saying it needed help to restructure and re-align its businesses.

The firm said it has assets of $3.84 billion but its debts amount to some $2.4 billion.

AMD owns about 8.7 per cent of Spansion, Fujitsu owns close to 11.54 per cent. µ
