THE BLACKBERRY BOLD has taken some heat in Japan, after the country's biggest mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, had to stop sales of the device due to overheating problems.
Just a week after the model went big in Japan – with DoCoMo claiming it sold some 4,000 of the high-end devices – 30 users have apparently complained that the phone's keyboard gets all hot and bothered when the battery is being recharged.
Probably worried that the INQ would start sniffing around for smoke and six-foot flames, Canadian firm RIM, which sells Blackberry devices in over 140 countries, was quick to say it hadn't received any reports of users getting burned or of phones catching fire. Reassuring.
The firm added "This issue appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold devices sold in Japan since last week and sales of BlackBerry Bold devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter".
Apparently RIM has managed to rule out linking the problems to the phone's battery and says it is now busily scurrying around trying to find the exact reason for the overheating. µ
...but it definitely doesn't affect other countries.
Honest.
Just like the Large Hadron Collider "It's going to do things we haven't even thought of yet, but it's completely safe."
I have a BB 9000 with ATT here in America. people over at the Crackberry.com forums have notice slight overheating when upgrading to "unreleased" OS's. When I got the BB it was just peachy. I then decided to get the beta OS since it actually overclocks the CPU a bit. I like the new OS, it loads my pictures in a flash. :)
I traded my Curve for the Bold a few weeks ago.
The Bold is much heavier on the juice - rarely lasts me a day whereas the Curve would often last two days.
Funny ... it's cpu is twice as powerful ... very responsive.
It does get hot when recharging or when on a long call.
I like it.
I live in Toronto, and use Rogers. I got my new Bold on December 22nd. I haven't had a problem with it and except for the 2 day battery life, it is so much better than any other phone I tried out. However, after reading this, I plugged it in, waited an hour, and have to say the keyboard does get a bit warmer, but nothing that would make me want to return it...I just leave it face up, and let it charge.
