KOREAN ELECTRONICS GIANT LG is getting set to wind down its plasma screen panel production facility if the slump in demand for the long-in-the-tooth technology continues.
LG boss Lee Gyu-hong told Kyodo News that he could not see a future in continuing to try to reduce plasma manufacturing costs and that the company was likely to announce the end of production by the end of 2009.
The company is hoping to regain lost ground in the LCD market, which is seen as the future of big screen manufacturing because of lower costs and less environmental impact.
Pioneer announced earlier this month that it would end the production of plasma panels almost immediately. µ
I'm a flat panel ludite, I haven't gotten one for home yet. However when I was doing some research a while back I seem to recall one of the advantages plasma had over LCD was it's response time in fast moving action was significantly better. The quality of fast moving action on LCD's was inferior. Has the newest generation of LCD panels overcome that?
The disadvantage of plasma that it starts ghosting after a while and they don't last as long, iirc.
I agree with jweller13. My brother and I bought my father a new TV for Christmas and found the plasmas far superior in picture quality, and motion quality than LCD. LCD's have over exaggerated colors, far fewer reproducable colors and are grainy and have motion problems compared to plasma. I have no idea why the market has moved toward LCD's other than production costs. We bought a plasma.
I think the tv manufacturers know something we dont. Canon is starting to ramp up it's SED technology side. I think Plasam will have to move over so that this next phosphor based system has room. It's supposed to be more energy efficient. BTW, I love my 50-inch Vizio plasma I bought last summer for $1400. LCD's blueish light, the speed of the panel, and the viewing angle issues make it look like I'm sitting in front of a computer. I dont care if my Plasma needs 500W. That's a $100/year power premium I'm willing to pay to watch my movies with the wife. I looks like Panasonic will be the last Plasma maker standing. Come on SED TVs ! Where are you?!?
Also when you buy an LCD you don't get a free space heater.
i have both.. LCD ftw
I still have a CRT Toshiba and it still has a better picture/response time then LCD or Plasma, and it lasts longer. Not to mention at 160 pounds I do not think anybody is going to steal it....
It seems LG are giving up on quality, and resigning themselves to the fact consumers don't understand the key differences between LCD and Plasma, so they may as well sell the one that's cheaper to make.
Anyone that thinks even a high end LCD can even come close to the quality of a plasma (even a entry level one) is severely deluded, or been brainwashed by sales staff keen to sell the sets with the best commission (which are usually the sets that are cheaper to make. As for silly comments about Plsamas being heaters, or energy hogs, the people clearly don't understand the key differences between the technologies, as both are pretty similar on power usage. LCD's has a massive backlight, and then blank out pixels to get blacks (not very black), Plasmas only turn on the pixels they need. What this means is TFT will have constant medium power consumption, plasma will have a swing of power conumptions depending upon whats being displayed, if it's a pure white image, it will be very high, if it's a black image, very low.
The only thing the TV makers know (that we don't) is that they can make more money on LCD's than Plasma's.
The very best LCD's have narrowed the response time / contrast gap to Plasma's... but comparing similar price points there is still a huge gap. Unfortunately the mass market doesn't really care about contrast and black level performance. That's not what sells TV's to 99% of people out there.
It is really that simple. Superior performance / technology doesn't always win out.
