Spansion cuts workforce by a third

FLASH MEMORY OUTFIT Spansion is to axe 3,000 workers, 35 per cent of its workforce, and is looking for a buyer for the business

 

"This action was not undertaken lightly given its impact on our employees and their families," said Spansion president John Kispert, in a statement.

Biu he added: "We have a responsibility to preserve the value of the enterprise as we pursue our goal of positioning Spansion for a recovery through a restructuring and/or sale."

The company said that the redundancies would cost $25 milllion but would bring also save of $225 million over the coming year.

Yesterday, rival Micron announced it was laying off more staff and ending manufacturing of 200mm DRAM wafers. Both firms blamed a collapse in demand brought about by global economic meltdown. µ

Yep, this fine company sent their thousands of laid-off employees home without as much as a penny in severance. Then these good Christians rescinded their 10% management pay cut with the proceeds, because well, it was important to retain this successful management team.
