Acrobat Reader has dangerous bug

Disable Javascript until patch released
Monday, 23 February 2009, 10:36

ADOBE HAS WARNED that there is a critical bug in Acrobat Reader and users should disable Javascript for two weeks while Adobe comes up with a patch.

The flaw causes the software to crash and could allow an attacker to take control of the computer once it has been exploited.

Symantec security researcher Patrick Fitzgerald said that the vulnerability is caused by a PDF parsing error. It affects Adobe Reader 9 and earlier versions, and Adobe Acrobat Standard, Pro, Pro Extended 9, and earlier versions. µ

And just leave it off

Javascript should always be off. It's the first thing to do with anything that has it.

Sadly, I had to turn it on in the browser to post this comment. Come on people, you don't need it to make a comments page!

Difficult choice

Foxit Reader 3.0 filesize : 3.69MB
Acrobat Reader 9 filesize : 33.5MB

THAT hard for people to pick one huh?
But maybe Acrobat Reader DOES have the kitchen sink with it.

Update Blues

Every few weeks we see these warnings. Adobe Software seems to be a synonym for insecure software.

Acrobat alternative

I vote for for Sumatra PDF Viewer as a great Adobe Acrobat Reader replacement in Windows as it is free and open source. And it loads very, very quick. The exe installer file size is 1.19MB.
