Shoppers stay at home

INTERWEB SHOPPING in the UK was up 19 per cent year on year in January, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

With high street retailers feeling the pinch, either there are better bargains to be had online or all those folks losing their jobs didn't have PCs in the first place, we surmise.

Mike Petevinos, UK head of consulting for retail at Capgemini said the strong performance of online, "points to a continued need to invest in the development of their e-commerce propositions.”

According to Computing he also said this: “The question is whether bricks-and-clicks retailers can prioritise this sufficiently above the defensive strategies needed to combat tough high street trading. If not, the risk of widening the gap versus their pure-play rivals will be inevitable.” English is obviously not his first language though, so we'll excuse him. µ

*Online shopping in China was worth 120 billion yuan in 2008, up 128.5 per cent over 2007, according to a report.
