AFTER WHAT IT SAYS have been 22 months of constant development, the Debian Project announced the official release of Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 on Valentine's Day.

Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system which runs on anything from palmtops and handheld systems to supercomputers

A total of twelve architectures are supported. They are: Sun SPARC, HP Alpha, Motorola/IBM PowerPC, Intel IA-32, IA-64 , HP PA-RISC, MIPS, ARM, IBM S/390, and AMD64 and Intel EM64T.

The release, codenamed "Lenny" adds support for Marvell's Orion storage platform as well as support for several Netbooks, in particular the Asus Eeeee.

Lenny also contains the build tools for Emdebian which allow Debian source packages to be cross-built and shrunk to suit embedded ARM systems. It includes the new ARM EABI port, "armel" which is claimed to provide a more efficient use of ARM processors.

Newly introduced packages allow the full support of NTFS filesystems and the use of most multimedia keys out of the box. Support for Adobe Flash format files is available via the swfdec or Gnash plugins.

It even has a few new games including a first-person shooter or two.
