MICROSOFT wants to open chain of shops.
After Woolworths went down the tubes, the firm obviously thought it time to bring its own brand of pick 'n' mix software to the high street, to mix it up with the charity shops there.

Have a sweety
The company revealed yesterday that it had hired a bloke to oversee the development of new Microsoft retail outlets. David Porter, former head of worldwide product distribution for Dreamworks Animation, will be given the title of 'corporate vice president of retail stores' and will report directly to Microsoft chief operating officer Kevin Turner.
Prior to joining Dreamworks, Porter spent a 25 year stretch with US retail chain Wal Mart.
"This is an exciting time with our strong lineup of upcoming product releases including Windows 7 and new releases of Windows Live and Windows Mobile," Turner said.
"David’s unique and diverse background, coupled with his deep retail roots and distribution understanding, will be an invaluable asset in this long-term effort."
The company did not give any time-frame or possible locations for the stores, noting that such planning would be among Porter's first tasks when he beings at the company next week.
Additionally, Porter will be charged with overhauling the company's existing partnerships with third-party retailers.
"I am excited about helping consumers make more informed decisions about their PC and software purchases, and we’ll share learnings from our stores with our existing retail and OEM partners that are critical to our success," said Porter. µ
You can almost imagine the wall of body odour, tooth decay, and stale beer, that would hit you as you went in the front door. Apple enthusiasts might be unpleasant, but at least they're hygenic.
You'd only hang out on a Microsoft shop if you were returning an unstaisfactory product, surely? Chances are that you'd never actually make it past the queue of Vista users grumpily queueing for their refund. Later to be replaced by the queue of grumpy Win7 users who'd overwritten their crappy Vista systems and now wanted help.
mainly out of curiosity, I want a M$ retail store. I am currently running windows 7 beta and I have to say it is like nothing I have used before. It looks nice and is very stable. Nothing has crashed yet, no UAC messages, but I turned those off in vista anyway. What I am wondering is how Microsoft will open a store and what is going to be sold in it. I don't think that they would be selling just software. maybe they will start making their own laptops and PC's, or would they sell brand name computers like dells, HP, ect. They did make their own MP3 player, so I don't think they are far off from making other products. Then again, apple started off making hardware and software....voleware?
