Itunes rival becomes free for all in Blighty

Nibble Don't need an invite
Wed Feb 11 2009, 13:01

ITUNES RIVAL SPOTIFY has dumped the requirement that punters must be invited before they sign up and is letting any old person in, at least in the UK.

The outfit has said it may reinstate the invite scheme should it grow too rapidly because it wants punters to have the same fast, uninterrupted service.

This is the reason why it has not opened its doors in its native Sweden because it wants to keep a lid on traffic. The outfit is large in Blighty but even bigger in Sweden, the site claims. µ

Competitor

Sam, i aint used Spotify but i believe it allows the option to purchase music you like. Obviously this could then be played on a portable player. Effectively a try before you buy as it were.

Competitor? Really?

Spotify is a streaming music service, much like Pandora. As yet there is no way of playing its music outside of Windows and Mac operating systems (although can run under Wine in Linux), let alone on network music players like Squeezebox and Sonos. And you certainly can't download tracks to an MP3 player.

I hate iTunes. A lot. But this is hardly a competitor when it's an entirely different product whose music can't be listened to on a portable MP3 player.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
