Google takes on BlackBerry

With software from Microsoft
Tuesday, 10 February 2009, 10:51

SEARCH OUTFIT GOOGLE is hoping to take on Blackberry by synchronising its free web-based email service with smart phones using Microsoft software.

Google Sync will updates Gmail messages, calendars, and contact lists in iPhones or Windows-based mobile devices.

It mirrors the way that RIM'S BlackBerry and Apple's Mobile Me service pushes Microsoft Exchange email from servers to those popular smart phones. µ

"push"

Google Sync is not "push" in the same way Blackberries are. Blackberry's "push" means it tells me I have new email before the Gmail window open in my desktop browser does. Google Sync, while an absolutely wonderful piece of software that updates BB's calendar with Google Calendar info (and vice versa), does not manage to be nearly as instant.

After the recent Obama Blackberry fiasco, should Inq just stop writing about Blackberries until they get someone who actually understands what they do?
