Numonyx births 45nm NOR flash

Promises volume production in 2010
Mon Feb 09 2009, 22:04

INTEL SPIN-OFF Numonyx has announced its first samples of multi-level cell (MLC) NOR flash memory on 45nm process technology and says volume production will begin in 2010.

Numonyx's NOR flash memory chips are mostly used in mobile phones and the firm reckons its Self-Aligned-Contact (SAC) process architecture will make for around 50 per cent lower production costs per bit, as well as higher speeds than the firm's previous 65nm offerings.

Numonyx is sampling now in limited quantities and densities, and plans to introduce products on the new technology this year. High volume production is expected in 2010.

Ed Doller, Numonyx's CTO said the change was no easy feat for the firm, noting "Numonyx engineers overcame major scaling limitations" in pushing out the 45 nm technology.

The firm says it's sampling the devices in limited quantities and will even make a few products on the new technology sometime this year before ramping up production in 2010. µ

Just do it.

Never thought of flash memory in terms of the process, 65nm, 45nm. Do these get hot like other chips? Can they be overclocked? Seems like if you're not running them as hot as they can handle, it's not optimized properly. A heat sensor optimized dynamic clock setting, maybe.
