WHEN SALES HIT a mild hiccough, and your partners are up to their eyeballs in parts you stuffed into the channel to make earlier numbers look good, what do you do?
You rename the parts aging like a bucket of dead snails to create a new and shiny product.
Fanbois fall for this every time, but sadly so do average consumers. Genius. Or not actually.
Nvidia is doing it with chipsets - the G92, soon to be the GT250 et al, then the rest become GT1xx.
The firm is telling OEMs that all they need to do is update the BIOS to milk the unknowing.
Someday, people will catch on, but for now, it is working so well, or they are so desperate to clear inventory, that they are doing it to chipsets as well.
According to the always-spot-on VR-Zone, the Nforce 780a SLI chipset is now called the Nforce 980a SLI, 200 better!
They didn't even have the decency to change the stepping number but, then again, we hear decency is dead and buried.
In any case, you can read about it here. And remember, 200 more of anything is no trivial matter. µ
I still remember being burned on my MX440 when I was building my first computer. Renaming old crap and selling it at a premium is a good way to loose customers. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I expect local computer resellers will be flogging these "NEW" mobo's at seemingly great prices in a few months.
Thanks
Did anyone realize that if Charlie's dream comes true, NVIDA would go under... Then Charlie would be out of a job. But if NVIDIA succeeds, Charlie would have nothing to say. Management might even fire him. Can you a company sue a media company for throwing out improper info? I wonder.
Notice how none of those parts are in retail channels, or are even likely to be in retail channels as they're contradictive of ATi's naming scheme (i.e. no RV630 part even comes close to an RV730 part, but they're listed has higher end parts in that driver .inf, on that ground it's likely nothing particularly important or relevant to retail graphics cards anyway).
Actually, they might be, I wouldn't be all that surprised if they were notebook parts, but then, much worse naming happens in the notebook sector.
But .. but .. but .. Charlie .. I thought Nvidia should have been out of the chipset business many months ago, according to your numerous posts. If they have no chipsets, how can they name them?
Or, are you just lying again?

That would be most of the 4XXX cards being RV610/630
When are you going to do an expose on ATIs dodgy business?
@cvxvxx , Better Linux compatibility on high end chippery is priority. LOL
Because your MP3s/MP4s and Intenetz need top notch performance.
Somehow when i buy high end chippery the last OS i will be installing on the rig is Linux.
Can someone provide me with an example of ATI renaming the same product to deceive the consumer.
I know that they rebranded their line twice since the 9000 series. X000/x1000 series and HD2000 series, but i am unaware of them branding the same product as new.
Charlie is owned by Intel no doubt about that.
Unfortunately chip renaming is a (bad)common pratice equally shared between ATI end Nvidia.
It depende on the inventory status and beancounters needs.
I have decided, reading the comments from the Nvidiot fan club to make a one time special offer to you all, never to be repeated:
I will take your old car, change the registration plate and bingo! You've got a brand new car, and I'll only charge you $5,000 for the priveledge.
I know its an insanely good offer, get a new car, just like your old one for $5,000, but since it has a new license plate its a new car, you'll love it! I promise...
More Charlie spam, more Charlie spam. When are these "new and renamed" chipsets going to come out anyway? Wasn't it Charlie's beloved ATi that started the renaming blitz with its 3xxx series anyway?
Charlier the ATi spammer strikes again.
Renaming parts is nothing new for Nvidia. They have been renaming its parts since the GF3. What is more concerning is that fact for years Nvidia was the leader in the progress of 3D cards but now is stifling developement. They still do not have a DX10.1 card and pay developers not to make DX10.1 games. DX11 will be the death of Nvidia. Doent worry we will remember you just like we remember 3dfx Interactive.
its always negative nvidia and positive ATI god cart they say something constructive
And what's wrong with 780? It's the most advanced chipset in its class, OC's well, supports tri-SLI, and offers better Linux compatiblity compared to ATI. Having said that, it also supports the latest generation of processors. And while NV is renaming the chipset to 980, consumers still get a brand new board with added features. Stop trying to imply that 980 is just a BIOS refresh of 780.
Even their High end graphics stuff (GTX285?) is still a massive 4500 less than ATI's HD4870. When will the renaming start?
