Brits still suffering from the pinch

The virus, not the economic downturn
Wed Feb 04 2009, 13:41

A WHOLE year after the authors of a malware site were arrested, some 73 Brits are still infected by a variation of the infamous Pinch Trojan, according to security software vendor, Prevx.

The Russian cyber-criminals obviously weren't very good at their chosen profession because Prevx was able to break into their malware site and access the data they'd collected. In total about 4,000 people worldwide are infected.

The most worrying aspect to the whole incident is that the perpetuators appear to have bought a software kit off the Net and then simply added their own pinch of salt to the Trojan recipe.

It enabled the crooks to steal their victims' credit card details, passwords and other personal information. Plus in many instances, the infected machines were actually running anti-virus software.

Naturally, Prevx would be absolutely delighted to flog worried INQ readers its Edge security software to detect the Trojan.

However, a manual search for the files 1.exe and 2.exe - or even pinch.exe itself - will give an indication of whether you're infected or not. µ

With a decent internet browser and if using windows XP or whatever a decent firewall working with your router if you have 1. Good anti virus (I use AVG Free thou 8.0 is bloatware memory I dont care about), Spyware Blaster free spyware program and Spybot 1.6.2 and not clicking on everything under the sun and playing caution to the wind you should be fine.

But as the saying goes Curiosity Killed The Cat or in this case your PC.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
