LUDDITE SENATORS IN THE LAND OF THE FREE are so terrified of technology they are not going to allow laptops in the debating chamber in Missouri.
It is the second time that administrators in Jefferson City have had a crack at getting their politicians into the 21st century, but the crusty Luddites have said no.
the plan was to let senators have laptop computers at their chamber desks, but opposition members wanted restrictions so that the laptops could only be used to perform senate work.
Since those in favour of the bill could not guarantee that, they let the whole idea lapse.
Currently the only people allowed computers in the Missouri Senate are staff members who draft amendments, and journos.
Some of the younger senators use devices like Blackberrys and iPhones to check e-mail and the Internet. The rest just use quills and parchment and send messages by street urchin.
Apparently people are not really worried about the technology, but are more concerned that the standard of debate might suffer if senators are watching porn or reading the news on The Onion.
Of course they can read the paper or a good book now, but if a laptop is involved it somehow makes it different. µ

Some people are just not so taken with the fanatical position you and others of your ilk are. You know, those of you who have a vested interest in pressing tacky techy stuff forward whether it's needed or not. Yeah, you have to do that Nicky because if you don't, or are not successful at it, you're out of a job. Sad but true.
But it will be alwight Nicky, it'll be alwight, I pwomise.

The nation was two weeks away from the original date of Feb. 17 for the digital transition, allowing broadcasters to replace analog TV signals with digital ones.
But the Obama administration and many Democrats asked for the delay, saying millions of people are not ready for the switch. The bill, already approved by the Senate, now goes to the president for his approval, considered a given.
