Amazon now flogging game downloads

Third rate titles at cut-down prices

THE WORLD'S BIGGEST BOOK SHOP is branching out into the software downloads business with a bunch of bargain bucket games all wrapped up in an Itune App Store-like shell.

The current best seller on Amazon's casual gaming portal is Totem Tribe (no... we've never heard of it either) which looks, like just another cutesy sub-Civilisation humanity sim with a $9.99 price tag.

There are around 600 titles in total, three of which are free (including Build-a-lot which is  a property developing simulator which might seem a bit cruel given the current climate).

We reckon the downloads, which are pretty much all pegged at $6.99 or $9.99, are wildly overpriced judging by the quality of the titles on offer, and will attract only the least discerning of casual (very, very casual) gamers.

Some sample screen shots... better upgrade that graphics card!

The only saving grace is that most games can be downloaded on a try-before-you-buy basis for a 30-minute trial which should save you coughing up your hard-earned cash on a game which ends up in the recycle bin after 30 seconds.

Far Cry 2 fans need not apply. µ

A La Reflexive.com...

wow, copying is a form of cashing in... these titles are the same as on reflexive, albeit much cheaper. You think $10 is expensive, the same game costs $20 to $30 on reflexive. At least Amazon isn't so much as gouging.

Actually...

That does not look that bad. Think of it as XBOX Live... you can download movies, music, and now those addictive internet time wasters. Why let MSN get all the fun.

*3rd* rate???

I gave it a try. Jewel Quest II is not bad, in a fairly simple "addictive like Solitaire" kind of way. The other two are, charitably speaking, pretty lame. Their strategy of offering free product to get you to nibble was a good idea, but dudes... put your BEST product forward, not the very bottom of the selloff bin!
