US GAME maker Electronic Arts is reporting a net loss for the eighth quarter in a row.
It might be the biggest games publisher with a large number of success stories but for some reason it lost $641 million for the three months that ended in December. This is even worse than the net loss of $33 million for the same period a year ago.
The problem is compounded by the outfit's decision to release some big titles, including The Sims 3, Godfather 2 and Dragon Age, in 2010 rather than in fiscal 2009. µ
What's even more interesting, is that PS3 is their most profitable system.
Perhaps because it's the only system where piracy does not run rampant...
I won't be buying anymore EA games. I'm sick of their DRM screwing with my system, I'm sick of them not fixing reported bugs, I'm sick of them blaiming everybody but themselves for problems....
With customer 'service' like this I'd suggest other disgruntled customers are voting with their feet.
I think it is hard to say piracy isn't caused by overpriced software. Corporate greed is fueling the demand for pirated games. If I could get a new game for $20 and download it off of web site instead of paying $60 for an xbox games( more in the EU) then I would do that. well, I have a wii and 8800GT sli so that doesn't matter, but it still applies. I do lots of photoshop work and think that paying $400 for a "new" program(cs2 to cs3) is unreasonable. My point is, if these things cost less, people wouldn't pirate them so much. Contrary to what the company's tell us, I wouldn't buy the overpriced crap they are flogging as new even if it wasn't easily available at some unmentionable sites. Im sure as hell not going to buy something that puts DRM software on my computer and be punished for being the good guy. I hate you EA, you can burn. BTW, i used up my 5 installs with spore...
I quit buying EA games (and I buy A LOT of games - price isn't the issue) when they started ensisting that DRM wasn't a bad thing having re-installed by system TWICE due to EA DRM going AWOL.
I am not suprised they are the most pirated games publisher (seeing a link here EA???) when the pirated version is usually DRM free...(I do not advocate piracy, but EA cannot be suprised)
Losers. Go poke your DRM where that sun don't shine.
And I totally agree that DRM is the root cause. I used to use EA Link, renamed EA Downloader. I purchased Battelfield 2142 through it, that worked okay. I also purchased a few add-ons for Battelfield 2 (and yes, I do have BF 1942 as well, the whole collection, bought twice because my first disc cracked in the DVD player due to overuse).
The problems started when the game patches came out. None of the patches downloaded through EA Downloader worked on the game. Every one of them that I tried broke EA Downloader. Guess what ? If EA Download is broken, you can't play the game. Now guess what ? You cannot reinstall EA Download without reinstalling the games attached to it. And the clincher ? You cannot reinstall the game from already-downloaded files - you have to download them again. All of them. How's that for customer satisfaction ?
Now for the quizz : can you guess how much time and how many GBs I have had to go through to get BF 2142 running over the seven patches that have been issued ? Not to mention the fact that my key has now been revoked, probably due to the fact that I got sick of endlessly nursing this baby and left it alone for about a year. Now I simply cannot play it any more. Why ? Because when I try reinstalling (ie reinstalling EA Download, downloading the files and launching the install), I get an error message that just thrills me to no end : Invalid CD Key. Well of course the CD key is invalid, you morons. IT'S A DIGITAL PURCHASE !!! Needless to say, that is last EA Games will hear from my wallet before a long time. And if they go under, I won't miss them.
They think we are criminal.they think they can control our computer.....hell no. i don't like to control my computer by some one.hell yeah i like to install or uninstall game any time.whenever i like coz i paid for that.game is not like the a condom use one time and throw way.now they will learn some lesson we have to teach them.
I think the problem is that EA stopped making games and decided to be a distribution company.
The games that they still do make are mediocre at best.
Playing FIFA or Hockey you notice the quality of product they turn out, games that are full of coding errors and bugs.
I think this boils down to the whole Beta culture argument, "not to worry we'll fix it with a patch after".
EA does not sell more product on PS3, the percentage of games sold on the PS3 the majority of them consist of EA product, thats because their first party support is lacking.
Either way EA no longer cares about the consumer and only profit, note they are a third party distributor for the 360 as well, if youre a company and wish to have your product on the 360 you more than likely will go through EA to do this. Games that otherwise would not carry the EA brand have to on the 360.
Sad really.
EA have shown no respect to there source of income the common gamer to me EA have 1 policy "Makes the Shareholders Happy". I respect the fact there a business but the fact is if they stopped asking there devs to rush the games out the door and took time with them people may buy them.
For example take Dead Space the game wasn't rushed and EA which was the dev took there time and it sold well and was praised for it's good graphics.
To be honest they deserve thsi to happen to them even games with online are poor quality no deadicated servers to any of there games. Certain games have broken things like achievements in NFS carbon and Battlfield Bad Company.
PS3 is making them more money yet they still refuse to make the PS3 the main development platform to save costs. Spend a little money on quality and get the respect Devil May Cry 4 was ported over from PS3 to 360 and there wasn't that much difference so it can be done with time.
I gave up on EA after the copy of Tiberium Wars I bought would not run because I had Daemon Tools installed. EA it is none of your business to be snooping about on my computer and if you don't like my programs brick the 74$ special edition I paid for. I don't plan on paying EA anymore of my money.
You suck.
EAs The Sims 3 is scheduled for a June 2 release on the PC. Versions for the Mac, iPhone and iPod Touch will come later in the summer.
Electronic Arts said on Tuesday that The Sims 3, the third full iteration of one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, will hit store shelves on June 2.
The game will be released for PCs first, and versions for the Mac, iPhone, and iPod Touch should come later in the summer, EA said.
The original version of The Sims, which launched in 2000, quickly became the best-selling PC game of all time. In the years since, the franchise has surpassed 100 million total units sold, counting The Sims 2 and all of the expansions for both full iterations.
Originally developed by legendary game designer Will Wrights Maxis studio--which is now focused on Spore--The Sims has since become its own division within EA. As such, it is run out of the companys Redwood Shores, Calif., headquarters, while Maxis is based in Emeryville, Calif.
On Tuesday, EA also announced its third-quarter earnings and said it would be laying off about 1,100 employees--about 11 percent of its total staff--and closing 12 facilities worldwide.PPS, Reason campare converterbox to SSD is Coverter signal is 900Mhz/s, if SIMS Had that Bandwidth SSD, it be better too. with tuners, memory spaces, playback, email, pvr inside, converter box is way ahead on SSD ladder. Maybe NEW Super System, conveter box & Puter 7Ultee' Game Player thru matrix of gates. Anyway EA, its slowdown until its BIG,Powerful & Easy to setup. thinks powerful part could use stepUP.indeed take that converter/worksta box Potential & turn it into vast manipulation of video content. drashek
To all of the bottom feeders pirating games because they cost too much: Maybe you should get a job and use that money to buy games when you have saved your pennies? Don't try to make yourself feel better saying games are too expensive. It is losers like you who wouldn't pay $5.00 for a game, never mind $50 because you don't see a down side. It is also losers like you that make me have to deal with DRM on games that I buy legitimately. Here's a good rule to follow: If it costs money and you can't afford it, DON'T USE IT! Don't want to pay for Photoshop? Download GIMP and enjoy that half-baked experience for free, but don't steal the top-shelf experience that is Photoshop and justify it with your personal definition of "fair pricing". You may think you are mature at 30, 40, or 50 years old, but if you are pirating software, you are still just a little common thief/punk/douchebag who can't afford his or her toys.
Well, I do agree that lately EA just seems to be churning out mediocrity.
However, from my own perspective, I made a concious decision quite a while ago to never buy any EA games until they losened their stance on DRM.
I'm very pleased to see so many people here sharing the same view.
I think about 3-4 years ago EA has started sliding downhill game franchise wise, (I.E. Need For Speed series) and the nastiness of DRM just added gasoline to the fire. Especially with the latest NFS Undercover aka the Crap tastic surprise of 2008 which I had high hopes for just showes me the company is not what it used to be. Doesnt help either that games (especially console games) are starting to cost an arm and a leg. No wonder peeps turn to piracy. Its just gonna keep turning into a more and more vicious cycle.
EA games suck, plain and simple.
good racing games have a release once every 3 years, look at Gran Turismo series, yes EA has the guts to release a Need For Speed once every six month for the same price. no wonder people stopped buying their games.
Big companies that eat everything need to die for new small developer groups to rise up with better, more creative products. Maybe this economic crisis will speed things up.
People were pirating games 9 years ago when Sims was released and it still sells. The problem is with the quality of the games and with DRM too. I would buy a game if I liked it. Someone else said it before I do: they started making good-looking crappy games and they still complain about their sales falling down on them. A few years back someone said we are entering the photographic era for games, the hardware vendors to sell expensive computer parts and there are a lot of new technologies, but that at some point the game developers will start producing games that actually mean something and that have a really good built story. I guess that now it is time for the story telling games...
EA killed Ultima Online development of sequels. Now with the intrusive DRM, I refuse to do business with them.
Dear Ea,
If you think im gonna pay 40-70 Dollars
For a game i can only load up 5 times and only works if i get ten patches to finally play the game the way it says on the box?
Guess again.
You will continue to lose money until you either go out of business or get withe the program.
Your choice ill still have the money no matter what happens to your company.
On a side not these games are such crap these days they are not even worth pirating IMO.
Still think DRM is the way to go?
