Touch Tosh is no Android

Uses Beast's Mobile instead
Tuesday, 3 February 2009, 12:47

DESPITE THE weather, Toshiba unveiled a brand new mobile phone today - the TG01. Despite the nomenclature, this is a Windows Mobile 6.1 based handset not a Google Android device.

Jumping on the 'let's outdo the Ithingey' bandwagon, naturally the TG01 is a touchscreen device with a 4.1 inch screen. It's also slimmer than an Ithingey at 9.9 mm deep.

The most impressive feature is that it boasts a Qualcomm 1 GHZ Snapdragon processor, making it one of the most powerful smartphones around.

It sports all the usual smartphone facilities including GPS (with A-GPS); Wi-fi and support for high speed 3G not only in the shape of HSDPA but HSUPA as well.

Being born out of the Beast's loins, naturally the browser is Mobile Internet Explorer 6.0 - but with the added advantage that it supports Flash. So watching standard videos will now be a doddle.

Curiously, instead of a standard accelerometer, the TG01 apparently has what Toshiba is describing as a 'G-sensor'. The upshot is that the user can shake the handset to answer or finish a phone call. Very niffty.

More details available when Toshiba's PR people finally check their Crackberries. µ

Missing specs

Actually, there weren't many important specs we'd omitted. The only possible exception being Bluetooth support. However, the blurb does say that it offers SDHC memory support up to 32 GB. Perhaps that should be Micro SDHC? I dunno.

Internet Explorer 6!

This is this broken, crippled, unpatched, zombie-like version of IE 6, that Microsoft are preparing for the Chinese mobile market is it? Oh, joy! The handset comes with a browser which is, by the manufacturers own claims, two whole versions slower, less stable and less secure than the current one.

@Daniel

Don't like IE, then think Opera-Mini. I am. Free and simple. There is always Plan B, C, D, E, and Plan 9 from Outer Space.

If you put it in your back pocket and sit down,

it's broken. So instead you will need to wear a poncey wallet type belt attachment, everywhere. I have a phone like one of these, and it's great, but it's a right royal pain to wear a belt pouch all the time. Is there one of these that you can put in your back pocket and sit down and it doesn't break?

High resolution: 800x480

...same resolution as a 7inch netbook, and more than twice that of the iPhone and G1 (which have 480x320 pixels).

"Only 9.9mm thick, it uses a 4.1-inch WVGA 800 x 480 384k pixel resistive touch screen and comes with support for 3G HSPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and assisted-GPS."
