iPhone will win the console war

Nibble Mac press writes off Nintendo DS, Sony PSP
Tuesday, 3 February 2009, 18:31

THE GLORIOUS APPLE PRESS CORE has breathlessly claimed that iPhones will replace the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

Apparently Mac Rumours quoted Com Score stats which asked fanboys if they were likely to download a game to play on their Steve Jobs-blessed toys. Much to their surprise they found that 32 per cent of them already had.

This is in comparison industry statists that show only 3.8 of other smartphone users would do the same. What's more, iPhone users were responsible for 14 per cent of all mobile game downloads last year. This means, of course, that Sony and Nintendo should give up now... apparently.

We know that Apple fanboys are desperate to make their tiny market shares into something significant but 14 per cent is fairly pathetic when you compare it to the Nintendo and DS market.

Also these machines claim a huge chunk of market share in Japan, a land which has ignored Jobs Mob completely. µ

I think not...

I doubt it. For instance in our household we have 5 DS Lite consoles (pretty much one each) and the only bit of Apple kit we have is an old iMac G3 which is currently working as a door stop.

If you ask me the iPhone is an overpriced unless you want to take out a contract. If they were under £100 on PAYG then I'd be more likely to get one.

ROFLMAO

I'm sorry, but that article put me in hysterics. The things that fanboys will say about their products, especially Apple fanboys!!!

All you alter are belong to be made of Iphone

Do This In Remembrance Of Me (and suffer not those who are not yet in communion with us, for they shall surely have their tonsures removed).

Denial...the first step towards acceptance

I've dealt with my fair share of fanboys and there is no fanboy more rabid then an apple fanboy. A little something for those that don't realise it, that 14% of mobile games means mobile phone games only. Hell there has been more DS's sold in the last 3 months then iPhones since they were released and the PSP still outnumbers the iPhone by around 3 1/2 to 1. The iPhone is an over priced brick that isn't worth the plastic it's made of and anyone who isn't a trend obsessed idiot knows it.

Keep 'em coming

Just love all those glowing PR releases full of meaningless stats and figures.
Gives great ammo a year down the line to shoot the fanboys with in the forums.
And I welcome with open arms the opportunity to liken the iPhone to a toy. Thanks guys, you've just given me an argument of choice to get them all riled up.
That said, the iPhone is an expensive gadget, owned primarily by adults (at least in the age sense). The DS and PSP are game consoles owned primarily by kids.
Kids do not have money for the iPhone and will not before quite a while, besides which I don't see kids caring for it anyway. I do see kids caring about the next version of the DS - I have a kid at home and it's all she talks about.
But hey (gratuitious snide remark alert), Jobs Mob doesn't have kids, so how could they know ?

Missing the point...

The iPhone exists in a very different marketplace to the PSP and DS. Those consoles sell relatively expensive games for kids and teenagers (predominantly - apart from the Baby Boomers buying the DS just to play Brain Age).

The iPhone sells relatively inexpensive games to an older market, plus people buying games for their kids to play. And the iPod Touch extends that market down towards the early teenagers as well.

Add in the extreme ease with which you can buy games through the App Store, and you have an utterly different ecosystem from the conventional console.

The two ecosystems can happily coexist, so there is no point in trying to play one off against the other.

Not the same market

I'm sorry, but most of the games on the iPhone are those cheap internet games like Bejewed. Yhey are very basic. The games on the DS (and PSP I guess) are full real games. Games that people are willing to pay $20-30 for.

I prefer usable controls in games

The iphone hasnt a hope in hell of beating the DS, it's severely limited by the lack of buttons and theres only so many tilt and roll games you can make.
Playing normal games using a touch screen with no tactile feedback for controls is terrible.

Re: "A bit like global warming"

If you don't know squat about what global warming is, don't display it this obvious please. Makes me laugh my arse off.

Global warming makes your summers hotter and winters colder. If you want to know more (which you probably don't want to since you would've known this if you did) see www.google.com. Thinking for yourself is difficult isn't it?

Ontopic:
I work at a telephone company not selling the iPhone because it didn't work like it should on our network. That says enough imo. Apple should loose the "we are different from the rest of the world" attitude imo. Making products that can only be used in certain situations isn't what people want nowadays. So Apple, act to it and make a good device for a change.

Apple WILL win

Of course apple will win the console wars and dominate the entire gaming industry... just like they did with the Pippin...
