Dual-core and quad-core iMacs coming

FRUIT-THEMED toy maker Apple is likely to release two versions of the iMac in its next expected refresh. Punters with lots of money can have a dual-core machine while those with too much money can have a quad-core.

Analyst Shaw Wu of Kaufman Brothers, quoting sources inside the Cuppercino outfit, claims that Steve Jobs could not make up his mind about going for a dual core or a quad core and has decided to have both.

Apple has 20-inch and 24-inch screens for the iMac and Jobs' Mob has said that 24-inch iMacs will become rarer than a modest fanboy in the next few weeks. This suggests that it is about to be replaced. µ

OK But

Apple will probably still offer some lame ass video card even on the quad core making it a mediocre gaming platform at best if boot camped. I was going for the 24" one a while back and decided to build my own because of the weak video offered on the Mac. I am not saying it sucks such as built in video but don't try any modern FPS games on it and expect and good FPS. Maybe Apple has listened to my complaints and will surprise us. As for me I am upgrading my X38 platform to a Q9650 CPU and GTX 285 card, that should tide me over nicely for a while and it will be ready for Windows 7 64bit on a second HD.

Do you think the move was justified?
