THE CITY of Venice, which was famous gondolas and spooky gnomes in red coats has allowed invaders to book their weddings online.

The site, www.veniceconnected.it, currently allows visitors to reserve museum passes, excursions, airport shuttles, loo and parking passes. Now it will be also possible to arrange a civil marriage in the city without leaving your computer.

More than 20 million tourists visited Venice in 2008, according to city authorities, and a fair number thought it would be a good time to either pop the question or shack up.

The English-language site is here. µ
