Core i7 processor to be shipped in mega laptop

Core i7 in Lapland

INTEL'S Core i7 processor is about to be shipped inside a laptop by Canadian PC retailer Eurocom.

According to Eurocom's website, its new beast of a laptop, the D900F Phantom i7 - weighing in at an arm-aching 5.4 kilograms - will sport Chipzilla's Core i7 processor, usually reserved for  higher-end desktops or servers.

The laptop certainly comes with some heavy hitting specs, with the Core i7 920, 940 and 965 processors running at speeds between 2.66GHz and 3.2GHz. That includes 8MB of L2 cache to boot.

The monster laptop will purportedly have a 17-inch screen, 8GB of DDR3 memory, 1GB of graphics memory and support up to 1.5TB of storage. Eurocom says its product will include the X58 chipset and an Nvidia GPU, all powered by a 12-cell battery.

Wireless on the D900F Phantom i7 will, unsurprisingly, be 802.11a/b/g/n and Eurocom promises to ship it in both Windows Vista and Linux flavours.

How much punters will have to shell out for the oversized lap cruncher - which starts shipping May 1st - is yet to be determined, but judging by its specs, we reckon the price may be as overized as the machine itself.

Core i7 isn't exactly made for laptops, and Intel has said it will be scaling down its Nehalem architecture for other chips which are a better fit for laptops as well as mainstream desktops at some point in the second half of 2009. µ

uh

I'm curious to see how many seconds they can make the battery last with a 130 watt processor inside it.

i'll just wait for clarcksfield or auburndale.

TDP != Power consumption (previous poser)

For the 1000th time can folks stop using TDP and power consumption interchangeably? All three i7 processors have the same TDP, do they all consume the same power? I'm so confused... if they all have the same TDP, shouldn't they use the same amount of power? Wait a second are you telling me TDP is a DESIGN # and not an actual measured #? (PS - this is the slowest bin i7, which will help with power and also has a 12 cell battery which will also help with battery life. Not saying this is the most practical of laptops, but before we start drawing conclusions on battery life, could you at least think things through, instead of trying to dump on Intel for the sake of dumping on Intel?)

please learn about Clevo's previous beasts

this article is a little behind.

read the Engadget one or the NotebookReview.com articles that are more accurate.

if you knew Clevo, you would realize that they have been making notebooks with desktop CPUs for a while.

Recently,
D900T with LGA775 Pentium 4 EE
D900K with Socket 939 AMD X2, FX-60, or Opteron

Currently,
D901C with LGA775 Intel Core 2 Duo / Exteme / Quad (65nm & 45nm), three internal HDDs and SLI MXM Type IV vidoecards

FYI, the D901C also has the best notebook cooling design to-date.... no other notebook can match it.

As for batterylife:

I have the Clevo D900K (world's first dual core notebook), its got the same 12-cell battery and uses desktop Socket 939 AMD CPUs (TDP 130w)
- I get about 1.5 hours of batterylife, and 45 min if I put it to full load

Mr

Please, do not use your imaginary "laptopland" (lapland) in this context.

Did you know that Lapland is a geographic region that cosists of some northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sápmi_(area)#Lapland)? Also, the Father Christmas lives in the Finnish part of the Lapland. Clearly, you don't believe in him.
