Samsung releases densest DRAM ever

Densest? Is that even a word?
Fri Jan 30 2009, 10:08

SAMSUNG ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY the world's first four gigabit DDR3 DRAM chip, using 50nm process technology.

Aimed at data centers which are seeking a reduction in the number of servers they use, the 4Gb DDR3 is intended to reduce costs, improve server time management and increase overall efficiency.

SamchipThe 4Gb DDR3 can be produced in 16 gigabyte registered dual in-line memory modules (RDIMM) for servers, as well as 8GB unbuffered DIMM (UDIMM) for workstations and desktop PCs, and 8GB small outline DIMM (SODIMM) for laptops. By applying dual-die package technology, this new device can deliver modules of up to 32GB - offering twice as much capacity as memory modules based on the previous highest chip density of 2Gb.

Designed to be low-powered, the 4Gb DDR3 DRAM operates at 1.35 volts improving throughput by 20 percent over a 1.5V DDR3. Maximum speed is 1.6 gigabits per second. µ

East17,

Your opinion plain stinks. I wanted to complain about your comment, but would rather reply here.

Looky here, http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,674770/Reviews/Core_i7_with_12_GiByte_DDR3-RAM_tested_-_benefits_for_GTA_4/?page=2

You can see that 12GB actually gives a nice benefit (20% performance increase) over 6GB in GTAIV. Hard to believe, huh? Vista x64 is designed to be so memory-hungry that even a whopping 6GB of RAM is not enough for a game like this. That's one of the reasons why I hate Vista so much, but DDR3 prices are supposed to fall so much this year that we'd be seeing 6GB kits for under $100 by this fall, hopefully..

But the way you whined without having even played any games newer than Far Cry and Prey places you in the dark days. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if you just whined today about why we need DVD players over VHS.

more ram please

east17, think lots of virtual machines. these will take all the extra ram you could throw at em.

Re: What to do with all this RAM ?

I use tmpfs under Linux (Think auto-adjusting RAM disk) and when I'm converting DVDs to XVID, it speeds things up quite a bit. I'm currently running 8GB, on some of these converts, it can go beyond that. I'd love to be running 16GB+ on my ramdisk.

What to do with all this RAM ?

I don't want to be as narrow minded as Bill gates was back in the days, but what could the average user do with all this RAM? I know a Core i7 platform would rise up to 48 GB or Tripple-Chanel RAM and that's not a problem because that what enthusiasts care for, "bigger, more, longer, thicker" and it's good to know that the performance is there, available, if you need it. But what about us, the average users, using a simple Dual Channel platform that, even with only 2 DIMM-s installed, would be dealing with 16 GB of RAM ? What good would 16 GB of RAM do ? I'm building simple websites, writing articles, building different ISOs , writing DVDs, watching Xvid & DivX movies, even HD ones , printing papers, listening music ... all working flawlessly on my Barton @ 2200MHz w/ 512 MB DDR500 and a somewhat fast HDD such as the 320GB AAKB. I'm even playing games such as FarCRY or Prey @ HQ settings on the 1950 Pro 512 MB AGP that I have ... ok it's not Crysis but these are the first two games that I got to play since 2003 :) . So, I don't discount the need for performance, but I discount the need for QUANTITY ... Just like in the HDD business : what's with the 2 TB drive ? Progress is always good but wouldn't it have been better if there would have been a 1 TB driver that was able to have at least 105 MB/s sustained writes & reads ? Look @ SSDs , the way SSDs are evolving is bringing up the R300 enthusiasm in me. The 48 GB Core i7 super/mega/gaming platform is like offering a 20 Kg potatoes bonus to a 50" FullHD plasma.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
