DELL HAS BEEN SECRETLY beavering away on a smartphone for a year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
A team of engineers has been working at a phone from an office in the Chicago area which are based on both Google's Android operating system and Microsoft Windows Mobile.
One model has a touch screen but no physical keyboard, while another is a slider-style device with a keypad that appears from under the screen.
The WSJ claims the smartphone development team spent much of last year meeting with suppliers of phone parts, phone software companies, and Asian phone manufacturers. µ

Dell has never pole vaulted over others' technology in any significant way. It's just not in their DNA. They're good copycats, and they have a great deal of leverage to get components at a bargain price, but no one ever accused them of leading the market in design or innovation. That's not going to change just because they need to stop bleeding cash.
I do sympathize with their shareholders. Things are not going to get better for them for a very long time, if ever.
If I were Michael Dell, I'd sell the company to HP, buy an island in the South Pacific, and never be heard from again.
Dellfonics ... advertising can include that song from Jackie Brown.
