Verizon terminates VoIP services

Something big on the way
Thu Jan 29 2009, 10:55

CUSTOMERS OF Verizon's Voicewing VoIP service are receiving notice that the service will come to an end on March 31st.

VoIP phones, it seems, are no longer on the menu for Voicewing as Verizon has a bigger plan involving MID-type solutions - like the newly-announced 'Hub' - and services, over fiber optic connections, as part of its next-generation network.

AT&T had an identical reality check just last summer, when it stopped signing people on to its CallVantage service. Deltathree, the company that provides the back end to Voicewing's VoIP service has been tanking in the stock exchange for a while and is currently trading at $0.04.

ISPs in fact have done their best to kill their own VoIP with traffic shaping, blocking and through a lack of a real marketing strategy - going as far as not developing their own technology but relying on third parties (as is the case) to deliver the goods - all the time getting ready for the prime-time.

Poor ol' VoIP never stood a chance. µ

Magic Hijack is hardly a friend

it can be one of those friends that you prefer your enemies to.
Not to say it is worthless, i'm running it for about half a year now with ok results most of the times. however it is not "just plug it in!" solution. before buying into it please read up the unofficial forum - a great help.
