EU refuses to give Intel more time

Dons rubber gloves for anti-trust probe
Wed Jan 28 2009, 11:15

THE EU is refusing to give Intel any more document-gathering time or to entertain any further delay in its ongoing antitrust probe against the firm for purported anti-competitive behaviour towards rival AMD.

In July 2007, Intel was accused by the European Commission of having paid off retailers to sell Intel Inside PCs only, slipping cash to OEMs who agreed to slow launch plans for AMD based PCs and offering significant rebates toOEMs who agreed to stick to building Intel based notebooks.

Intel protested its innocence, of course, saying AMD had been making the same allegations repeatedly for years.

The Eurocrats weren't buying it though, and in October, Intel was forced to file an appeal to the European Court of First Instance to get a temporary pause in proceedings. Chipzilla spinner, Chuck Mulloy, reckoned the pause was necessary in order for Intel to dredge up enough evidence to conduct a proper defense.

Sadly for Intel, the EU is having none of it, calling time on Chipzilla and its attempts to sift through more AMD documents to help defend itself with.

This has AMD rubbing its hands with glee, but nothing is over until it's over and Intel says it will review the court's decision and decide on its next move soon. µ

Don't make me laugh

@no business sense

Your lack of knowledge of the business practices of that era which I Know was referring is shocking.

@Cman

Exactly what competition does Nvidia offer Intel in the desktop/server segment dare I ask? And those price cuts were only due to AMD's aggressive pricing standard that started about 1 1/2 years ago.

@Hyprocacy

If the manufacturer of a product that at the time dominates 80% of the consummers' purchases tells you that if you don't sell only they line of products they will not give 'loyality rewards' in terms of cash rebates and such and that you will be paying for those products at a different price point from everyone else that fall in line, how would you react?

Can someone update me on...

...the status of all these European etailers who allegedly engaged in illegal and non-competitive activity as well? Surely the EU is going after all these companies who CHOSE to take the money and "collude" with Intel against AMD. Any bets on if Intel is fined whether there will be action taken against the EU's etailers for their involvement? My money is on NO. (US and/or multinational companies are a far better cash cow, eh?)

Ah the stupid-er-est....

"Why would Intel innovate when there is no competition?" Ummm... maybe because people would stop buying products or slow down on upgrade cycles? If you have no competition how do you grow your company? Obviously, in your world you would just stop innovating and pray people will upgrade their computer for absolutely no benefit. You innovate to sell new/better products - would you upgrade a 2year old computer for one that is 5% faster? Innovation would continue despite all of the experts yelling 'the sky will fall with no competition' - you may not like the pace or cost of innovation but it would not stop.

Prices

People keep yapping about high prices yet I have seen nothing but price drops on CPU's. ALso AMD isn't the only competition, witness Nvidia, Arm, etc. Get clue alreadym

@ssj4Gogeta

Why would you want Intel to win if they did commit these crimes against us all? You are a victim, as are most of us.

Over-inflated prices are the results of this type of crime. You pay, I pay, we all pay.

We need AMD, Intel, and hopefully some others to come into the market. The more competition, then the better the products, pricing and general value for money.

Monopolistic crimes should involve long prison sentences. Fining a company is too lenient. The Execs should be facing up to 10 years in prison because they are commiting theft on such a grand scale (literally stealing from millions of people).

It's one law for the fat cats and another for the rest.

@I know

You know, the same goes for you. I never said AMD should disappear. And if you acknowledge that AMD was the reason behind current Intel CPU's, then you should also agree that Intel is the reason behind Phenom II's. If Intel were not here, you would be still running your AMD64's. At least when faced with competition Intel fought bravely and came up with the revolutionary Core 2's. When AMD was faced with competition, after two years they come up with Phenom II's which can barely compete with a year old Intel processors.

Satan Clara

"Intel protested its innocence, of course."

Yeah, just like they did in Japan and Korea. Fortunately for the rest of us, (excludes Satan Clara and Sylvie) Intel got their butts handed to them there.
Next up: getting fried and dried by the EU. it's merely a matter of time before Intel are exposed for what they are - a predatory monopoly.
Sadly, because of Intel damage (predation and intermittent tech superiority), AMD damage (Hector the idiot,intermittent tech superiority) and the world economy tanking, AMD might not be around when its lawsuit against Intel comes to court.

AMD or Intel inside?

Who cares what brand CPU you like..... if proven true, these allegations paint a picture of unfair/illegal trade practices! AMD is more than happy to compete on a "level" playing field, even if it is a generation behind!

Competition is good.... monopoly bad!

ah the stupidity

Chipzilla to WIN? I guess you have no idea about how this game works ..... let me enlighten you! 1st: without AMD you dumbass would be running a 486 Intel machine and would pay $5k. Why would Intel innovate when there is no competition? And dont bullshit and say they would cus anyone with interest in making money will not spend it if it has little benefit. 2nd: Only reason Intel got Israel to make 'em Core CPU's is cus AMD kicked their sorry asses with AMD64 or did you think that NetBurst was better than sex? --- plz plz plz remember the following: " Its better to kpep one's mouth shut and look stupid then to open it and dispel all doubt"

Intel inside

I really hope Chipzilla win this case. We definitely want more great processors. To all AMD fanboys, accept the fact that AMD is still a generation behind.
