Intel's Barrett to retire in May

Going out in style
Friday, 23 January 2009, 23:03

CRAIG BARRETT, Intel's Chairman and erstwhile CEO, will retire from his current position and his role on the Intel board this coming May.

Barrett, who joined the chip firm as an engineer in 1974 and was the first non-founder CEO, has announced he will leave the firm in early May, after the annual shareholder meeting. In a surprise move, Intel will name independent director Jane Shaw as non-executive chairwoman, marking the first time for the firm to appoint someone to the position from outside the executive ranks.

While serving as Chief Executive between 1998 and 2005, Barrett famously used his position to both standardise and thoroughly overhaul Chipzilla's manufacturing plants.

In his years as the company's Chairman since 2005, Barrett became Intel's chief globetrotter, taking an active role in the firm's World Ahead Programme to bring IT developments and education to the developing world. Barrett also serves as the U.N. chair for the Global Alliance for Information and Communications Technology and Development.

In a statement, Barrett noted he was "extremely proud" to have helped Intel become the world's largest and most successful semiconductor company and said he had "every confidence that Intel will continue this leadership under the direction of Paul Otellini and his management team." µ

AMD anyone?

What a load of selfserving BS. It was very nice he was kissing babies around the world. What is not right is that he neglected his CEO duties to do it. His tenure as CEO will be remembered for total lack of focus by Intel. His lousy actions and inactions allowed AMD to establish a strong beachhead and also allowed ARM to completely take over mobile device market while at the same time he was looking to compete with his major customers (D'oh!). It took almost running Intel into a ground for him to realize he needs to refocus on their core business, chip making, and left otellini a hot potatoe. Good riddance, I say.
