LAST WEEK WE mentioned a merger might be on the cards with Micron's Steven Appleton rumoured to have flown to Taiwan for negotiations with both Nanya Technology and Inotera Memories.
This week the rumours gain momentum with Appleton likely to make yet another visit, according to secret sources within the companies.
Appleton will also purportedly travel to Japan where he'll meet with top execs from Elpida Memory in a bid to get the firm onboard for a 5-into-1 alliance of DRAM players. Elpida is apparently key to forming such an alliance, which would be well-placed to take advantage of a Taiwanese government bailout plan for the flailing DRAM industry.
Nanya and Inotera parent company, Nan Ya Plastics, however, are not convinced that such an alliance is the way to go, preferring the more classic ménage à trois, which would involve just Micron, Nanya and Inotera. µ

Will these 5 companies getting together have a significant impact on supply and pricing? If the deal doesn't happen, what are the chances of prices going up from all involved? Someone should call the Feds and get those phones and meetings taped! ;-)
