THE EU IS TODAY expected to look at new laws that will cut the cost of SMS charges across the bloc.

The move is being debated by the EU Industry Committee today and if it gets through this stage it could have its first reading at the plenary session of European Parliament in April.

The Commission's proposal, which will remain in force until 30 June 2013, sets a maximum charge of €0.11 from July 2009 for SMS sent throughout the EU. Text messages will be free to receive.

The telcos are telling governments to mind their own business. µ
