DDR3 memory won't hit mainstream until 2010

DRam drama

ANALYSTS DRAMexchange have warned that the global recession will lead to a delay in the mainstream adoption of DDR3 Memory.

The memory chip counters say that thanks to the overall oversupply situation and the severe financial crisis DDR2 1GB eTT chip price dropped by 73 per cent. This means the DDR3 chip price was also affected.

DDR3 1033 MHz 1GB contract price plunged from US$13 to $8 making its price about the same as the DDR2 667 MHz 1GB contract price in December of 2008.

The analysts say that with the oversupply situation and the global recession, the schedule of DDR3 becoming mainstream item willl be delayed again. µ

important

meh? no. ddr3 is the key to next generation processors, pretty much across the board. AMD and intel have processors ready to roll, with memory controllers that can only work with ddr3. the longer it takes for ddr3 to become cheaper and mainstream, then the less motivation these companies have for releasing their ddr3 platforms. inel have already delayed lynnfield due to this. it would push back the whole roadmaps, next generation atom circa 2010 logical solution will have a IMC. without cheap ddr3 to go along with it, it cannot suceed as the current atom platform has.

only DDR3?

I read somewhere the upcoming socket AM3 CPUs will have memory controllers that will work with both DDR2 and DDR3.
