Sapphire goes DDR4

Lots of toys in a slow time
Mon Jan 19 2009, 00:04

SAPPHIRE NEVER SEEMS to stop churning out the goodies and, even though ATI hasn't released anything recently, that hasn't stopped Sapphire. The action this time seems to be around the highest end and the mid-range parts.

First up is a rather unique part, a GDDR4-based HD4670. It has 512M of memory and the clocks are cranked to 750MHz for the core, 1100/2200MHz for the memory. They were able to do this by designing their own cooler with a large diameter fan. Sapphire claims noise will be sub-20dBa.

That is loud compared to the Ultimate version that will hit the shelves in about one to two weeks. This one is a totally passive 4670, something that makes it a very attractive candidate for an HTPC. Multiple 1080p decoders and the ability to run most games decently without a fan is a good thing. I can see this one doing well.

The other news is a bit more catered to the hardcore. Since the vanilla HD4870s are now selling for well under $200, it is time for the limited editions to come down as well. You can get a Toxic with 512M of DDR5 for under $230, high-end cooler and all.

Sapphire Atomic HD4870X2

Last up, we have the geek equivalent of a swimsuit model shot, the Atomic HD4870X2. It is a closed-loop, water-cooled X2 with a CPU cooler and fan. Unlike a few others, this one has the default clocks upped to 800/1000 (4000)MHz, so it is not only fast, but quiet as well.

Sadly, it is also a limited edition and not all that cheap.

You get what you pay for, though. µ

Re: Headline

There is no DDR4. There is only GDDR4.

Oh, and your comment system sucks. It runs lines together, strips out > characters, and THERE IS NO PREVIEW OPTION!!!

If you're going for 4870, go for 1GB RAM

it makes quite a difference according to the review sites when you get up and over 1920x1080 pixels. It only costs an extra 10% of the purchase price.

Atomic not Toxic

The last one is an atomic, not a toxic. it even says it on the CPU block.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
