New York cancels wireless network contract

Wants its money back
Friday, 16 January 2009, 15:53

THE STATE of New York has cancelled the multi-year contract to construct a public safety wireless network for which it's already paid out $54 million.

Awarded to M/A-COM over competitor Motorola in 2004, the contract was intended to build out a statewide wireless communications network for police, fire and ambulance services.

The state released a document alleging that excessive equipment failures occurred in tests, including radios with stuck volume controls, inoperative 'black screens' and microphones that turn on randomly. The state said testing in November found that M/A-COM failed to fix 15 of 19 deficiencies that had been previously documented.

M/A-COM's contract required it to place $50 million in a construction bond holding account, and the state has demanded that as payment for M/A-COM's alleged default on the contract, plus any additional expenses over that amount.

MA/COM disputes that it is in default on the contract. It said in a statement, "We believe that M/A-COM has fulfilled its contractual obligations and delivered a state-of-the-art system that would benefit the residents of New York."

The state hopes to find another contractor to build the network. "By cancelling the contract, it doesn't mean we're cancelling our commitment," said Angela Liotta, spokeswoman for the state's CIO.

Issuing a new RFP to find another vendor could take up to 18 months, she said. µ

Liberals at it again

When you think of New York what comes mind? OK 9-11 and a big city with Clinton as a senator. The city and state are run by a bunch of liberals and I love how they use one of their favorite sayings for another boondoggle, "For the public safety". They also love "For your Safety" when they pass laws that take away your rights. Liberals are going to destroy this once great Republic, with good intention I'm sure. See it's not the results you should judge those idiots by but their good intentions, they meant well. Make me puke.

New York, the Empire state

Okay, so as a taxpayer in the state of New York, I am demanding a reduction in taxes because of this contract cancellation.

This is why my company generally avoids doing work for NY state. The people awarding contracts are all dim-witted bureaucrats who have NO idea of what they are contracting for, plus they are alwaying changing their minds, can't make timely decisions, etc. Useless parasites all.

And the state wastes money on a LOT of useless CRAP.

If I didn't live so close to Albany, I would recommend it as a terrorist target.

And it was bad enough having that carpetbagger Clinton pretend to represent NY in the US Senate, now the blind governor of the state is going to appoint Caroline Kennedy to take her place. That's right, preserve the useless bimbo vote by replacing one with another. And NY's senior senator, Chuck Schumer? Don't get me started...

At least it's not the UK....

Here the company would demand another £54mil to "fix the problems" and our government would pay it, then the product would be delivered and it still wouldn't work properly, and they'd still charge us millions to support it. Finally the company would go bust and we'd chuck a few more million at it to keep it going....
