Intel profits fall 90 per cent

Forecast ugly
Fri Jan 16 2009, 11:23

INTEL SAW its sales slip 23 per cent and profits down 90 per cent last quarter, and it has warned shareholders that it doesn't anticipate that results will turn up in the first quarter.

The stock market was prepared for the news, since Chipzilla had cut back its fourth-quarter revenue forecast twice in recent weeks, saying weak PC sales were impacting chip demand.

The Satan Clara-based microprocessor giant further said it cannot foresee when computer chip demand might recover, so it set low expectations for the first quarter, and all of 2009.

The company forecast 2009 sales of about $7 billion, off by more than 25 per cent from last year. Intel also said its gross margin will likely deteriorate from over 50 per cent of sales to less than 45 per cent. µ

Speak for yourself, I still have plenty of use for fast CPUs. More and more audio and video processing is moving from hardware to software, and CUDA isn't the savior yet.

Music production (and to some extent, live performance) is now dependant on software instruments of terrifying complexity and power. Workflows have become bejewelled polychrome enimgas of dizzying mercucurial lunacy. You can do shit they ain't got words for, boy :)

Hell, see a cloud of sweaty people in a packed venue, dancing their delectable asses off to pounding electronic dance music- it's increasingly likely the DJ is using Traktor, Serato or Ableton, doing insane things in realtime, often on several virtual decks- even if it looks like he's using good ol' SL1210Mk2 or CDJs. That stuff needs low-latency, high-power machines that never miss a beat. The CPUs and the host chipsets need to be incredible.

VJing, realtime video effects, broadcast graphics and goodness knows what else- they are often GPU accelerated, but they need a hell of a lot of CPU grunt actually pull off the really impressive stuff.

Sure, these things probably would work better backended by a DSP farm than a general-purpose CPU, but developing for those is expensive.

Sophisticated modelling- blood blow int he brain, protein folding, the action of markets, the behaivior of antennas or the air over a bee's wing. Yes, you can go parallel for some of this stuff, but you still need smaller, faster, cheaper, denser nodes to make these things fly.

Anyway, end of ramble, those are the things that require a fast CPU and intersect with my preoccupations. I'll stop bothering you now.

Satan IS, indeed, opposite Santa

dropie, we're talking about Santa Clara here, not Santa Claus. In that aspect, Santa = Saint, so yeah, pretty much the opposite to Satan.

SATAN is not oposite SANTA

Not to begin a theological discution here but SATAN is not oposite SANTA.

SATAN is Christian Theology while Santa is Modern Mithology (Modern Mithology has given us also Superheroes).

So to say Satan is oposite Santa is like saying Shiva is oposite Allah , or Santa is oposite war-god Ares(Mars).

Cheers

We have reached the point

We have reached the point where more Raw computing power is not really that necessary.
Most of the world knows what an internet experience should feel like. and Photoshop is lightning fast with almost anything unless you are doing very heavy work.
Video Editing is prerry fast, but could be faster. thats about it.
Games.... are almost all GPU bound. So.
Whats next. I can run most Operating systems on almost anything, Windows 7 is set to be more efficient and it looks like for once Microsoft might deliver on a faster OS.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
