Apple fanboy defects to Linux

Nibble Jobs' Mob addiction too expensive
Thursday, 15 January 2009, 12:53

SELF-CONFESSED Apple fanboy Christopher Dawson has decided that it is too expensive keeping his addiction to the hi-tech toys going and has defected to Linux.

Writing in his bog, the ZDNET hack woke up this week and realised he needed money for more important stuff. So he went back to Ubuntu Linux. He said that while Apple makes some "great products", they are not giving him the most bang for his buck.

Linux allows him to have a "real computer" inside some very inexpensive hardware, whether netbooks or extremely cheap desktops, he said.

If this recession keeps going he could be one of many. µ

How did they decide that apple macs were the best cost ratio for a school?

That guy picks the computers for schools and decided they would use Apples, I doubt there is a more expensive way. Couldn't he have achieved a better student result if he had picked cheaper, longer lasting items?

Apple have a *reputation* for being overpriced. But I keep hearing that, every time someone actually *investigates*, they discover that a PC of equivalent *quality* to an Apple also has an equivalent *price*tag*.

So although Apple do have a premium price tag, you do seem to get what you pay for, namely premium kit.

Cheers,
wol

I may defect too but for another reason

If Apple decides to put non removable batteries in all of their laptops I am gone and will not buy another. That would be a way down the road seeing how I just picked a new 2.4Ghz Macbook. Still nothing in my book beats OS X. I've used the Linux and it has came long way, auto updates and everything now but it still OS X has a place in my heart so to say. But isn't Nick getting Win 7 by Microbloat?

@wol

I can build a PC with the same components as a Mac Pro for $1500 or less (with name brand quality components ie. Asus, Crucial, Western Digital, etc.). Are you saying the case design and operating system is worth $1000? That's sure premium kit...

apple wake up smell the cofee

when will apple wake up and smell the coffee, normal pc users would love to have OSX on their systems, but they are not stupid buy something that is grossly overpriced (apple hardware), no matter wat apple does it will never acquire this type of computer user, they will always stay with MS or linux, so why not just allow your great OS onto any system, and capitalize on this. ask nvidia, ATI marvel, creative, Intel, AMD for some drivers then everything will be hunky dory, MS will lower its prices, and they would create fantastic market competition.
I mean I find it hard to believe that no VP or marketing guru over at apple has not floated the idea. this is utter stupidity. its like having the biggest diamond mine, instead of selling 1000 stones per day, they are only selling 700 stones, and the 300 is just sitting there doing nothing, no one knows about the 300 left over.

@JP - have you checked the spec?

I do love these idiots who claim that they can build the same spec as a Mac Pro for half the price, without bothering checking what that spec is. 2 Harpertown Xeons @ 2.8GHz will set you back $1460 alone. Add a dual core MB with DDR2 800 support ($350), 1100 watt PSU ($240), server class tower case with 4 hotswap drive bays ($240) and you're up to $2280 without such trivial details as a video card, RAM, HD etc. The kind folks at Dell will relieve you of nearly $3800 for a workstation spec'd similarly to the entry model Mac Pro.

Yeah Right Wol

Your saying that my ASUS G50v is of less quality then the compared MacBook Pro?
Let's compare the MBP that was being sold by Apple back when I got this.

Harddrive(s):
MacbookP - 250Gb 5400RPM
G50v - 2 x 250Gb 54000RPM
Winner: G50v

Monitor:
MacbookP - 1440 x 900
G50v - 1680 - 1050
Winner: G50v

RAM:
MacbookP - 2 Gigs DDR2 667
G50v - 4 Gigs DDR2 800
Winner: G50v

CPU:
MacbookP - 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2
G50v - 2.53 Intel Core 2
Winner: G50v

Chipset:
MacbookP - Santa Rose(Centrio)
G50v - Montevina (Centrino 2)
Winner: G50v

DVD
MacbookP - DVD Burner/Reader
G50v - DVD Burner/Reader/Lightscribe
Winner: G50v

Winner: G50v

I/O:
MacbookP - FW400, FW800, 2USB 2.0. Expresscard.
G50v - FW400, 4 USB2.0, 7 in 1 Card reader. eSata Plug. Expresscard.
Winner: Tie(But I'd say the eSata is more usefull then the FW800)

Video Out:
MacbookP - Dual-Link DVI
G50v - Standard VGA, HDMI(With option to send audio through it)
Winner: G50v

Extras:
MacbookP - Magsafe Power, built in camera, Motion sensor.
G50v - Motion Sensor in harddrives, built in camera, overclocking system built in, secondary LCD display for real time system info. Antenna plug for over air TV. Came with a game. And has a bunch of lights you can turn on or off with. =P
Winner:G50v

Price:
MacbookP - $2500
G50v - $1600
Winner: G50v

Overall: I think it's pretty clear what's going on.

I'm not surprised that people are starting to look elsewhere for their computing needs. I run Fedora, Ubuntu, Solaris, and Windows(XP, Vista) on my machines... and honestly I find myself using Linux more and more. Apple will have to do something to compete against the inexpensive hardware, and free OS solutions that are coming out.

@ Steve Todd

Good point and I agree. Price a high end Dell laptop that is comparable to a Macbook Pro and the price difference is not allot. While I agree Macs do cost more they are nice. I picked my black Macbook up off of Apples refurbished area and saved about 33% from the new price with full warranty and such. When I opened it and looked it closely over I could not find one mark on it, even the battery reported 0 cycles on it. Apple has to turn a profit and cannot sit back and rake in billions by having it's OS on every PC. The maybe could if they opened up OS X for the masses but thats another post in itself.

consumer macs are expensive. full stop. you cant compare a workstation, since when were 8 core dual socket workstation machines ever mainstream consumer products? since never, is when. apple sell their brand, they dont sell the hardware. everything from the iphone upwards to the macbooks are underspecced and overpriced, its just a fact.

@plasticman - yet another idiot

who hasn't checked his facts. Consider these two systems: iMac 20", base model - $1199. Dell XPS One, 20" base model - $1099. The iMac has less RAM, but has a 400MHz faster CPU. The Dell has Intel integrated GMA 310 graphics, the iMac has an ATI 2400XT with 128MB of it's own memory. The Mac compares badly on spec and price doesn't it </sarcasm Oh, and JP brought the Mac Pro up, and claimed he could build an equivalent machine for less than $1500. The pair of you seem well matched, you should meet.

This made a story?

One person of absolutely no significance to anyone here says he might swap religions (Linux has no fanboys, honestly).

WHO CARES? I mean, honestly???

When are people just going to get over this shit and buy what hell they want and then *shut the hell up about it*?

I just wish a) he'd USE the superior computer for something more useful than telling us he bought a new computer and b) it wouldn't start a hyper-surreal Pixar short-movie on religion and computers.

@Steve Todd - let's fight over spec then.

From http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=MTE2NjM

iMac 20" - USD1199.00
2.4Ghz Core Duo, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 8x Superdrive optical drive, ATI Radeon 2400XT 128MB GPU.

From http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=my&cs=mydhs1&kc=&l=en&oc=S210107MY&s=dhs

Dell Inspiron - MYR2399 or USD668.22
2.66Ghz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 16x DVD writer optical drive, ATI Radeon HD3450 256MB.

Dell PC trounced the iMac completely. The Dell only loses out on LCD size (Dell has 19"), but you can get a 22" Samsung from http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001306 for just USD229 and has dual monitor configuration and still cost less than the USD1199 iMac 20" anytime.

Like for Like

If your comparing like for like pc's vs Apple's the price is the same but the problem is the pc's that are bought by many fall into the MID / LOW end of the traditional desktop category where Apple simply dont bother to compete. I mean you cant call a mac mini and an iMac a typical desktop computer, same with the Dell one. They simply arent the most commonly bought items.

OSX seems to have better multicore support which is a shame as many normal desktop pc's that now include dual cores or quad cores could benefit from this but I doubt apple will walk into this market as they left it a long time ago to Microsoft pretty much.

Steve Todd = biggest idiot of all

it is known to every man and their grand mother that apple products are way overprices for their hardware spec. you are foolish enough to actually attempt argue otherwise. with the most inadequate example. ---

firstly the beauty of PC is that you dont have to buy branded machine, you can specify the parts and get it custom made, every PC shop offers at a very small cost, some even do it for free since you buy everything from them, buying a dell actually defeats the purpose. --- secondly. you are wrong, the base XPS one system is 899. --- thirdly, to build a PC at the 1199 imac's spec would actually cost roughly half that. ---lastly, evn the upgrade options shows you how much of a rip off is apple. 1GB to 2 GB DDR2-800 cost 75 USD? you can buy 8 GB of ram for that much. 250GB to 500 GB HD upgrade cost 100 usd? you can buy a whole 1TB drive for that money. USB dial up modem for..wait for it... FIFTY AMERICAN DOLLARS!!? how blind does one have to be to not see this is plain robbery.

@Wo

These pc's were for kids to use in school. I'm guessing that any low priced XP Home PC would have been sufficient. Apple don't have a product in that market. I'm shocked that this guy wasted some of the school's budget.

Now, if it's a limited number of apple pc's because they were "needed" for some media course then that's fair enough. But after reading the guy's own page I expect all the computers at that school, and all the training, are for Apples. Which is crazy, since 90% of PC's run Windows. He wasted money buying more expensive kit than was necessary, plus he probably had to train 90% of the staff. I wonder just how close his relationship is to the local apple sales manager, did he get kick backs if the kids, parents and teachers bought mac's?

The more I think about it, the more it stinks.

And it's laughable when he writes "I’ll always feel warm and fuzzy inside walking into an Apple Store" What a di#k. It's a shop, fer fecks sake, get a grip on yourself.
