Jobs is off the job

Updated Until June
Thursday, 15 January 2009, 01:00

THE GEPPETTO and CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has put in for some time off on sick leave, reports Yahoo News.

Jobs emailed his employees informing them he will be absent until June, as his medical condition is more complex than initially thought. Tim Cook, currently the COO at Apple, will be donning the Holy Turtleneck until the third coming, it seems.

Yahoo goes on to to discuss current and previous health issues surrounding Jobs, flinging the C-word around all over the place.

Update

Here's the full text of Steve's missive which went to all Apple staff in the UK:

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Steve

Apple stock nosedived by as much as ten per cent on the news and is currently trading abround seven per cent down on yesterday's numbers.

Hope he beats the odds

Pancreatic cancer has (on average) a 95% 5-year mortality rate, from diagnosis.

He was diagnosed and treated in 2004.

I hope he is one of the lucky ones.

Pancreatectomy

Mr. Jobs apparently requires a total pancreatectomy, or complete removal of the pancreas. The most likely reason for this is due to pancreatic cancer, although there are other potential (but less likely) causes. This is very serious surgery, with frequent complications, but many people who undergo total pancreatectomies live for a number of years afterward, albeit as diabetics.
