World's first Bluetooth barcode adapter is here

Get scanning
Wednesday, 14 January 2009, 15:18

TANGLE YOURSELF IN WIRES no longer as the first Bluetooth barcode adapter is here - and you won’t have to buy a whole new scanner.

Yes, we know that not all barcode scanners use wires, but the alternative is often a WLAN wireless network – which let’s face it, isn’t the most reliable of things.

The Sumlung SL-BA10 is the world’s first Bluetooth barcode adapter which is designed to fit into major handheld barcode scanners including Symbol, HHP and Metrologic and will convert this scanner into a Bluetooth device.

The main advantage of using this adapter is one which is close to many hearts this year – cost. By transforming the bog-standard scanner into a Bluetooth device Sumlung claims that you will save 30 to 50 per cent in costs in comparison to the traditional barcode scanner.

This device is aimed primarily at companies such as UPS, TNT, EMS and DHL as they will be able to scan the tracking number and the goods barcode straight into their mobile phone or PC. This technology could also be used in the warehouse and be sent the same way.

Scan

Other uses are for large retail outlets as the barcode can be scanned directly at the point of sale and be sent via Bluetooth to the company computer.

Although these are obvious uses for this device at present, there is also scope for improving the customer’s shopping experience as well as the seller. The device could be marketed as an aid to scanning your own items as you shop – the barcodes then uploaded straight to the till via Bluetooth.

The device could be used further as a mobile barcode data collection terminal when combined with a mobile phone.

In order to use this device in conjunction with your mobile phone or PC you must first remove the wire from the bottom of the traditional scanner, the device then fits in the bottom as shown below.

Adapterin

Sumlung SL-BA10 software must then be loaded onto either the PC or mobile phone and opened. Once this is completed and the device is switched on, the fun can begin. At present the suggested retail price for this adapter is around £60 yet Sumlung assured us that the wholesale price will be cheaper.

It looks as though the Sumlung SL-BA10 Bluetooth barcode adapter will be the next big thing in the scanning world and is due for release this very month. μ

bluetooth barcode scanner

My local grocery store has used bluetooth barcode scanners for years. I am surprised that manufacturers need to state that there device is the world's first, when it is only the world's newest.

Yes - not!

This is very old and cumbersome. You can buy hand scanners with Bluetooth built in and they come with a charger. The incremental cost is a whole lot less than 50 plus you don't get some stupid thing hanging off the end of the scanner- waiting to get busted off

And

For most businesses this kind of junk is small cash and is a tax write off anyway.

As someone else said, for most uses these things need to be rugged, and that setup looks anything but.

Add to original barcode scanner

Yes, usually Bluetooth barcode scanner is just a Bluetooth function adds to the handheld barcode scanner inside.
It's a good way add the Bluetooth function to the scanner outside.
Some new stores can buy handheld barcode scanner + the Bluetooth adapter or buy Bluetooth barcode scanner directly in the sales and the inventory management.
But the stores who have already used handheld barcode scanner can buy the Bluetooth adapter to add.

What Nonsence Hype

I've had a socket bluetooth scanner for years, it works well with my laptop, and old Windows Mobile phone. Haven't tried it with my Blackberry.

I get about 25m coverage between the scanner and my laptop - great for scanning incoming and outgoing goods.

My scanner is very rugged - that silly adaptor looks like it's going to break off.

Saves 30 to 50 per cent?

If it really saves 30 to 50 per cent in costs in comparison to the traditional barcode scanner, I will adopt it.
