Gamer shot parents after they took away his Halo

Judged sane
Tue Jan 13 2009, 20:05

A US GAMER SHOT his mother dead and left his father grievously wounded after they took away his copy of Halo 3.

In a Ohio court, defence lawyers for Daniel Petric, 17, argued his addiction to Halo 3 had made him insane.

But local Common Pleas Judge James Burge decided Petric was sane enough to have planned the attack for weeks.

The judge found Petric, who was tried as an adult, guilty of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and tampering with evidence over the October 20, 2007 shootings.

The kid's lawyer, James Kersey never denied that Daniel shot his parents in their home, but argued he was not guilty by reason of insanity because at the time he was addicted to Halo 3.

The court heard that on that October evening, Petric found the confiscated game in his father's strtong box alongside a 9 mm pistol. He subsequently walked into the living room and said: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you," and shot his father Mark, a pastor of the New Life Assembly of God Church, once in the face and his mother, Sue Petric, 43, twice in the arms and once in the head.

He then tried to put the gun in his father's hands, saying: "Dad, hey, here's your gun. Take it."

The judge agreed the kid probably had a few issues. But decided he wasn't insane enough to be innocent.

Halo--sends-you-bonkers

He ordered  more psychological testing to be carried out before passing sentence in the spring. The hapless killer faces a minimum sentence of 23 years to life in prison, and a maximum of life without parole. µ

For those too lazy to educate themselves...

The gun and video game were locked in a lockbox that junior opened. Junior decided to get even and asked his parents to close their eyes because he had a surprise for them. They did as he requested and then he shot them both in the head...

I'd say there's a pretty good chance that the pastor and his DEAD wife are the victims here but hey if you want to victimize them again with clueless comments, go right ahead.

Fry the bastard !

Hey this scum should be incinerated. Give him a copy of Halo 3 and wire him to 500,000 volts for ten minutes.

Over Halo???

I'm all for killing parents....but come on ...over Halo? What an idiot. If they would have taken away his COD4, I would completely understand.

On the bright side ...one less idiot in the gene pool.

um, no...

@ Mat:
'...his son obviously had some mental issues'

No, he obviously did NOT have enough mental issues for it to be the reason for the shooting. That's what the court found, and they had more evidence to ponder over than just a few online newspaper articles.

Doug - gameboy, lol!

key words...

"New Life Assembly of God Church" and "kid probably had a few issues" are the keys here.
From every 100 very religious people at least 5 get crazy at some point.

why blame the game?

he knew they would just respawn!
now he faces 23 years to life without a copy of halo 3..what is the real issue here? the game was an excuse for the murder, not the cause.

Why would you have guns in the homes of teenagers?

Why would you have guns in the homes of teenagers? That's just asking for trouble.

Guns don't kill people, rappers do ;-)

Old news

This is old news based on the headline. The real news is the scumbag was just convicted for his crimes. Life without parole would be suitable though the electric chair is preferred.

The Dretin's New Digs

I just hope the prison he's sent to doesn't allow games or else this piece of trash will kill others.

More than likely he'll be some hard timer's "Game Boy" in the end. Put a whole new spin on the phrase "first person shooter" for him.

Tell the world

Please make it the headline of every newspaper! Gamers kill! Join the crusade and blame everything on gamers!

Gaming/Murder..?

I've seen worse happen for less, mostly because of relationships and women. Is it worse that the kid went off the deep end because of a game, or that the father's "lock box" wasn't REALLY that secure when his son obviously had some mental issues.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.
