The online taxman cometh

Nibble So much for bargains
Tue Jan 13 2009, 12:19

WITH THE US recession gutting states' budgets, there is a sudden call to make a bit of cash on the side by taxing punters who buy online.

Until now, outfits that peddle their wares online have been able to enjoy a tax free status. But New York has decided that online companies must collect taxes on shipments to New York residents, even if the companies are located elsewhere.

Amazon is suing in that case but many online retailers fear they could be fighting a losing battle as states hope to squeeze $3 billion in new revenue for governments. µ

Someone's gotta pay for...

...the 1.2Bil being handed out to the Middle East (only 35% is going to AMD now) for the new Fab, the "entertainment" for folks like Spitzer and the new Gov Patterson (hotel rooms for his "friend"), and all the other corrupt NY state government officials (who are 2nd only to the great state of the Chosen One, Illinois). This is just a money grab for a state with an out of control budget and some of the highest sales and property taxes in the US. With all of the Wall St layoffs and the reduction in bonuses, NY's tax base is about to take a huge hit. Rather than do what people would do (but spending?!?!?), they just raise more taxes...
