Seagate appoints ex-CEO as CEO and Prez

Nibble Songwriter to lead company into SSD age
Monday, 12 January 2009, 13:55

IN A RATHER unusual decision, HDD maker Seagate Technologies has appointed former CEO Stephen Luczo as the company's new CEO and President, replacing William Watkins in the process.

That's quite easy to do if you're Chairman of the Board, which Luczo happens to be.

Luczo had already been CEO of Seagate from 1998 to 2004 and, although Chairman of the Board, has kept his fingers in several business pies and even doubles as a songwriter on his own time.

The company will be presenting its Q2 results on January 21st, but targets have been adjusted for a weaker demand. However, HDDs have become a relatively cheap commodity which usually signals diminishing returns. We don't expect the results to be pretty (for any HDD maker, mind you).

Luczo's self-appointment puts him at the helm of a very large ship that's due for a very large overhaul in 2009, as the company moves into the SSD business. µ

New Deathstar drives?

Why have you guys not done a story on the very high and sudden failure of Seagate's current 7200.11 drives? They are the new deathstar with a great line in boot-of-death as the drive locks itself into a busy state.

Seagate then return you a refurb, and all your data is gone, and won't address customers' tickets or fault reports.
