JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT you were getting a handle on SDHC cards, there is a new format about to launch, SDXC. Yup, more capacity, higher speeds, and unlike Pepsi, it still looks the same.
The short story is that the physical form factor is the same, but the file formatting is going to Microsoft's likely patented XFAT. This probably means higher pricing for royalties, but nowhere near as rapacious as Sony's loving squeezes.
The spec - not quite final but should be in Q1 - allows capacities of between 32GB and 2TB. Speeds also start at a max of 104MBps, but there is headroom for up to 300MBps. That should keep most people happy, and allow for more capacity than any camera has batteries to fill up. With no change in form factor, that is quite a feat. µ
HI THERE JUST WAIT UNTILL THE 2 TERABYTE SDXC AND 2 TERABYTE MICRO SD CARDS COME OUT YES THATS CORRECT TERABYTES NOT GEGABYTES
"FAT was granted a patent, so XFAT's illegality for Linux is nearly certain "
This is similar to the NTFS situation.
However, there is no reason that the normal SD-cards can not be formatted as ext3 or some other linux filesystem.
It will depend on the hardware drivers whether or not the SDXC hardware can be used with linux.
I don't see why that wouldn't be the case. I don't see the hardware boys wanting to shut out paying customers.
In general, I agree with mschira on two key points:
1 ) that Sd can replace Blue Ray .... once it is "commoditized" @ 10 for $10 +/- ( 32 GB )
2 ) having two SD card slots or a single unit for two cards is a good idea. And think of the space it saves ( v Blue Ray ) on a lap-top/notebook.
At the moment, I travel with a 32 GB SDHC ( class 4 ) card instead of a USB flash drive .... it is simply more convenient ... but is limited to FAT 32 ... and seems not to support NTFS ...
One issue is that the SD format maybe too small .... in that it is not possilble to print out an informative label to place on the disk.
"Speeds also start at a max of 104MBps"
What the hell does this mean? Why not just say it's a constant speed of 104MBps.
jUST AS THOUGHT HAD HOT Neo ART, FIND CHARLIE ALREADY DONE IT. Could there be big Memory Cloud thats RF to SD? Does 2Tb taste Better? If those where Mamories, it's be in National Geographic. Nice.
Co-opting the entire electronics world to make interoperability/freedom a felony ( if ACTA gets finished/signed ).
Beautiful.
Welcome to inmate-world, people.
MBps? Do you think it is a pleasure to read an article like this one?
MB/s - Megabytes per second
Mbit/s - Megabits per second
We found the new portable data medium: SD cards! They are great they are cheap, what more do you want? Right now one can buy cheap 16 GB cards, 32 GB will follow soon.
I am waiting for a Netbook with two SDXC slots. That's what we want! 8 Gb fast SSD build in + two SDXC slots. All you need. You can put one 16 Gb card in for the stuff that you think you'll always need and if you need lots of storage you have a second slot where you can swap the cards.
And you can upgrade it in a year to 32Gb. And to 64 in two years and so on. What more could you want?
