QuadFire HD 4870 X2 vs. QuadSLI GTX 295

Daily Roundup Doesn't get much better than this
Thursday, 8 January 2009, 23:15

IF YOU WANT A TASTE of real power you should read Guru of 3D's face-off pitting QuadFire HD 4870 X2 vs. Nvidia Quad-SLI GTX 295. Now that's a sight to behold! (the power bill, that is...)

German site Golem.de is also pitting the two giants, but in single card - GTX 295 vs. HD 4870 X2 (Googlenglish).

Nvidia's $199 GeForce 3D Vision is being tested at PC Perps. Ryan says it's the next big thing since Doom3 came along... *cough*

Fudzilla not only tested the GTX 295, but also the overclocked version, dubbed the Evga Geforce GTX 295+. It's a shocking 18MHz faster than its brothers...

Silent PC Review has a Zotac GF8200ITX mobo on test. The newly-released mobo is Zotac's first serious move in the AMD-capable segment, it seems.

Benchmark Reviews has a Mtron Mobi 3500 SLC-based SSD in their system and we don't think they want to pull it...

The much loved, but ultimately ignored Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 is on test at Tech Gage. Costing about $300 the price is just right.

Notebook Review got a snazzy Dell Studio XPS 16 lapwarmer. The 16-inch 1920x1080 screen alone should knock you off your feet...

OC Modshop has a way to turn your HDD into a hot-swappable drive, using the I-Star T5F-SS Hot Swap drive bay. Useful.

The ThermalTake Maxorb EX is a fairly sleek CPU cooler, but a bit on the wide side. Wide enough to knock against other components. It's on review at Modders Inc.

Even though today was all abou the GTX 295, not many users can afford or actually have PCs to match the performance. You can still buy stuff like the Leadtek 9800GTXs fairly cheap. There's one at TweakTown.

Driver Heaven has a SteelSeries 7G keyboard which, despite the 80s looks, is a pretty hot item amongst gamers. The keys are springy and you can press as many as you like without ghosting.

Think Computers has Noctua's NH-C12P cooler on the block (literally). It kinda hangs in there and does a great job at cooling and being quiet.

Bjorn3D has the Koolance VID-487 water block in their rig for a round of tests. Very good performance, says Steve.

Hardware Bistro is also testing a liquid cooling solution, the NorthQ Siberian Tiger water cooling kit. No maintenance required and not that expensive.

Elite Bastards has a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB Toxic edition on review.  Very quiet and with more than adequate performance in all games. µ

3D shutterglasses are soo 1998; I mean 2009

Well, you can criticize NV all you want, but I owned the 3D shutterglasses back in the day of the GF1DDR and played Q3A in 3D and still remember how Klesk jumped through the screen to pwn me like a n3wb.

I can't remember AMD releasing anything like this, ever. Sure some B-companies that were only interested in the 3D Cad have been releasing some stuff, but mainstream and price competitive ?

So once again NV releases a 3d solution based on the experiences all those years ago.

And it can't be compared with anything; I'm going to buy the thing; yes you can call me a fanboi, nvidiot.

AMD showing some finesse on motherboards

May I point out that AMD may be lagging long time in the CPU performance arena, but it's motherboards are getting better month by month. Lot's of features, HDMI out, hybrid crossfire... Intel is really sleeping over it's performance leadership... I've been looking at AMD Phenom II numbers, and they seem good in the game/office task aspect, that put together with AMD lower platform cost may bring many people back to AMD when they fell like the need to retire their Core 2 platform. Core i7 platform price must get down, or it's going to stay in the shelves.
