BT strikes back at 0870

Calls to this number are now free
Thursday, 8 January 2009, 12:27

IN A CLEVER PLOY to attract new business and retain its 14 million existing subscribers, BT has decided to make calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers free to those on its Anytime and Evening and Weekend tariffs.

The use of 0870 numbers in particular has been a long-standing grievance amongst consumers and led to the creation of Saynoto0870.com, a web site dedicated to providing alternative numbers for those using such prefixes.

The UK government even announced that it is looking into the use of 0845 numbers by the NHS. BT estimates that its decision may cost it as much as £24 million through lost revenues.

The biggest losers will be those who only have a mobile phone because they'll continue to pay over the top for 0845 and 0870 calls. Most mobile networks even charge for calls placed to 0800 numbers which are supposed to be 'free'.

BT's ploy will also benefit many PC-owning consumers who have previously been charged to call technical support centres on 0870 and 0845 numbers. µ

Managing The Brain Through Thoughts

If true, the joker that is BT is getting to be a real menace. The “chosen few” myriad of tricks to herd an indifferent & ignorant public is starting to turn full-circle. The fact that greed, inefficiency and ineptness can be promoted and rewarded exposes the depth of lunacy that is human inertia but when cockroaches are fighting for every morsel available, you can bet that the benefit will only be temporary. Afterall, all a screw needs is an abandined nut or three to start the lunatics rolling again. Disbelief is not how lunacy-cum-idiocy got started. It’s how he gets to repeat the same trick time and again and still gets away with it. A thief being rewarded for returning some of the loot. Nevertheless, the 08xx trick does help to confirm that there is no such thing as honesty in business.
