Microsoft on song with music software
FORGET WAILING down a microphone in your local boozer on a Saturday night while everyone politely smiles at your embarrassment, Microsoft has come up with software which makes anyone sound good – or reasonable anyway.
The company’s latest offering, Songsmith provides singing wannabes an avenue to express their strangled-cat melodies and even share them with friends and family.
For those of you who don’t have a Windows-based computer we’re afraid you won’t be able to join in with this popstar-producing phenomenon.
Yet for those of you who do have the relevant computer and the relevant interest in this software, you can download a free trial from the Microsoft Research website. The cheesetastic promo video has to be seen to be believed! The full version will be available from the online store for $29.95.
So, how can this software turn us from amateur warbler to international superstar? Well the truth is... it can’t. The software basically backs up the melody the user sings into the microphone by picking up the pitch using signal processors and artificial intelligence techniques.
The joys of this program include the choice of 30 different styles of music and downloads of new and exciting instruments to enjoy.
We must put our sniping aside momentarily, as the creators of this software are very serious about the technology used in Songsmith’s invention. It was developed in conjunction with Ian Simon at the University of Washington and uses signal processing techniques to sample a user’s voice and automatically select appropriate chords.
But it is still plain to see that the guys down at Microsoft Research were bored of being boffins and fancied themselves as musical sex symbols. μ
