Cisco gets into social networking

Fed up with routers
Wednesday, 7 January 2009, 10:58

THE COMPANY WHICH BUILT the hardware which built a large chunk of the World Wide Wibble is so fed up with people not know knowing what it makes, it has decided to get into social notworking.

Cisco Systems is launching Eos, a hosted software platform that allows media and entertainment companies to create, manage and grow online communities.

Basically the box has all the technology, tools and software to make building and customising social notworking sites a doddle.

Also bundled into the package is code that will allow fans to connect with musicians, TV shows, movies, or whatever brand a media company wants to promote.

Cisco started to realise that there was a lot of cash in big media companies in 2006 and it created a media solutions business unit.

The big idea was to develop new products for the big media content owners, especially those who wanted to interact better with their punters.

Last year Cisco bought a start-up called Five Across, which developed social networking software which is the basis of Cisco's Eos product.

Warner Music Group is the first major media company to sign up for the service and has used it to build web sites for two artists, Laura Izibor and Sean Paul. µ

sad frown cisco

Nice to see them spending valuable time & wads of cash developing the really important stuff us customers need.

Now where did I put that Cisco 64bit VPN client? Oh there it is in the Not-on-your-nelly-not-even-in-your-vapourware-dreams pile.

Meh.

But of courssssse...

The real reason Cisco is hopping on this is because of the high volume of drinking content due The INQUIRER - http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/959/1049959/drink-with-the-inq-without-leaving-your-keyboard - Now there is genius, and there is The INQUIRER. And Notworking; you decide which for a song you can look a gift horse that is both long in the tooth straight from the horse's mouth and of a different colour. Hi-Ho, CISCO!! ..."The reality is that media is so disrupted by digital technology -- In many ways digital destroys the value proposition for media," Scheinman said. "Other people can rip off the content and monetize it, aggregate it, and take pennies for it." Now Apple fanbois may tithe his highest honcho, and therebuy avoiding those embarrassing harmonal swings. Giddy Up!! -More, buy... putting the cart before the horse in One Horse Town! Are you ready to Pony up my posse comitatus? Lead a horse to water. Whisky for my men and beer for my horses. Now doddling dosh and dash away all!
