Brit mobile games company Player X in Top 100 finals

Some obscure magazine awards for VC funded outfits
Tuesday, 6 January 2009, 21:10

GOOD NEWS for a change. Feisty Brit mobile games company, Player X, has made it into the finals for the global top 100 privately held companies. Plus Player X reckons it's the only mobile company in the running, too.

So it proves that even in this meltdown you can have VC funding and still do well. The INQ asked Player X's infamous spokesman, Monty 'Goa' Munford, to what did he ascribe the company's current success?

His answer was running the games portal for the UK's mobile operator, O2. The company white labels the games side to the O2 portal and offers the same service to rivals under its 100% Mobile brand.

Munford described the financial returns from running O2's mobile games portal as "extraordinary". A happy coincidence of Player X's expertise and content plus independent games reviews appear to unleashed pent-up demand.

The obvious conclusion is that while the economy goes into meltdown, mobile phone users take the obvious route out and have a bit of light fun playing games on their handsets. µ
