Western Digital extends Mac HDD range

No Apple tax here
Tuesday, 6 January 2009, 15:00

MAKER OF SPINNY storage Western Digital has added two new Apple friendly hard drives to its range.

The My Passport Mac Edition portable and the Mybook Mac Edition desktop drives come pre-formatted in a HSF+ journaled stylee which will (admittedly like any other drive you care to buy off the shelf) talk to your Mac without having to fiddle with the formatting.

And as WD hasn't added the usual premium which Macolytes usually pay for anything with a 'Made For Mac' sticker on it, you won't have to feel like a tool because you don't know how to open Disk Utility and do a 30 second reformat of the drive (which is necessary if you want to use the Cupertino Company's Time Machine back-up system or run Boot Camp among other things).

The portable drives come in 320GB and 500GB flavours for £79 or £90 each, and the fatter, sturdier desktop job holds 500GB and retails for £102, which looks like a bit of a bargain given the current US dollar exchange rate and the WD Store price of $199.

The drives, which have been sympathetically designed so as not to look too ugly sitting next to your Jonathan Ive-designed pride and joy, come with USB and Firewire 400/800 interfaces and, unusually at this price, include cables for both. µ
