Quad-core MacBook Pro coming

Definitely, maybe
Wednesday, 31 December 2008, 12:56

THE DARK satanic rumour mill is convinced that Apple is going to release a Quad Core MacBook next week.

The logic is based on the fact that on Monday Intel released a the 2.53GHz Core 2 Quad mobile processor Q9000 without telling anyone.

A bit of sexy kit coming out when everyone is eating figgy pudding and earning hangovers is a but of a mystery. Intel could have milked that for a lot more. Instead it just stuck it in its CPU catalogue.

Apple fan boys think that Intel has been asked by Apple to shut up about the chip until it's new laptop can be announced.

Intel has not much to lose from doing so, as Apple will be a big customer for the chip. Besides, even if everyone is on hols, Jobs' Mob will give the chip its religious awe, which money on adverts in newspapers can't buy anyway.

APCMag.com says it's possible Apple's been waiting for the processor to arrive from Intel which will happen at the same time as MacWorld.

Acer is the only PC maker that has so far said it will be using the chip. µ

Q9000 isn't that fast

Intel list Q9000 as a 2Ghz part.

The Q9100 is listed as a 2.26Ghz part.

The QX9300 is the 2.53Ghz part... and, as always, the X will mean eXtremely eXpensive.

Yawn..... So what...

I dont see the market for something like this unless the price point was sub $2k (laughs). With all the great values in the midrange notebook segment you would be foolish to get something like this unless you were using apps optimized for 4 cores. Chances are you are not. But hey it's apple, I'm sure a few users will want the "prestige".

bobo

Dell (Alienware) already sells the 2.53GHz mobile quad core part. http://www.alienware.com/customize/m17-notebook.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-M17&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT.
Acer and Apple are not the only ones.
